Windows Security Center?

I just installed Microsoft Security Essentials and now I have Windows Security Center prompting me to turn on malware and spyware protection. I don't have this on windows 7. Is this related to MSE. Should I turn it off or follow what it says?

Yes and yes. There was an optional update definition update for MSE which I installed, it wasn't automatic. I can't see how to set it to do that. Maybe it is set already..

It may be displaying the message since you just installed it. If it doesn't go away after a bit, then follow the message to turn on malware and spyware protection.

Windows update will update automatically, if you have it set to do so.

With this settings everything will be done automatically.

edit- the instructions you posted are not the same as my version of update, but I think I have it set right. I have 'give me updates for MS products and check for new optional MS software when I update windows'

I'd like to set this up so it just does everything automatically and my mum doesn't have to worry about it, and risk screwing up the settings

I think I have it set right. The question is will in download and install MSE updates automatically.

Yes it should. It is easy to find out if it works.
Go to the MSE icon, left click and then go to the update tab. Under the tab you will see the time of the last update. Leave the computer on for a couple of nights (not really necessary but we want to be sure if it works). Then look at the time of the last update. 24-36 hours later check it again, it should show a more current date.
If you do not have the icon, go to search by the start button, and type security essentials, left click and then open.

I'm only here until wednesday, but I have teamviewer installed now and set up for remote access so I can still check up on this. I have finally mum-proofed my mum's computer!
