WLM 8.5 on Vista 64??

Are any of you actually running Vista x64? I'm curious because after I tried to install, Beta 1 failed at 80% and Beta 2 just pops up a box that says it doesn't install on this operating system.

After I contacted windows live messenger support, they responded that the Beta 2 installer doesn't work on 64bit xp or vista, and that thanks to user feedback, they plan to issue a beta that does sooner than the final release.

However, here on the Vista x64 forums, everyone is just talking about the Beta and nobody's mentioned the inability to install on, uh, Vista x64. Does that mean nobody is having a problem but me, or that nobody is running Vista x64 but me?

Anyone know how to make this work otherwise?

Hi Rob,

Yeah, they changed the Beta download area when they updated to the Beta 2. They have it set up with a installer manager program to download and install the program. This only works for the 32 bit Vista for now. If you do not already have Beta 1 installed before Beta 2, then we 64 bit users are left out in the cold until they release a 64 bit version.

The only option for now it to download the non Beta release 8.1.0178
Version of WLM and install and use it, and check every so often for a 64 bit update.

Is this the one that was released the other day with live mail etc. if so its only the package installer that doesn't work the products do, but there is a little bit of messing to get them to run.

Here’s how to get the latest builds installed on your machine:

With a hex editor Patch WLinstaller.exe at offset 0×1B9F0, change 74 to EB

Execute WLinstaller.exe

Attempt to install all products, ignore the installer errors and exit

Navigate to %systemroot%\Syswow64\config\systemprofile\AppData\
Local\WindowsLiveInstaller\MsiSources

Use the chart below to install the products you want to install/update.

Yes, it is only the package installer download that does not work for the 64 bit Vista. I have not seen any other way to download the actual WLM Beta program yet. I am hunting though. I am curious to see what is different in the Beta 2.

If you have access to a 32bit machine run the installer on the 32bit system then copy the above msi's from:-

C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\WindowsLiveInstaller\MsiSources

I had no problems changing the Hex and saving the changes.

When it installs, it only goes through the first part then nothing. I went to the SysWoW64 folder location, but there was no MsiSources folder there. ???

Wow, that's a pretty kick ass response.
I knew it was only the installer that was the problem. Part of my issue was that I could never get the Beta 1 installer to work right on my machine. It always got nearly finished then said that the installation failed.

As for the differences? beta 2 is just less buggy and doesn't have as many of the slowness and hangs that beta 1 had. I've been running beta 1 then beta 2 on my computer at the office since they came out.

Thanks for the help! I'll post my results after I get through these instructions.

I had the same problem. Nor have I been able to find the .msi files on an XP system with it installed.
