I use Windows Live Mail. Around 12 months ago now my ISP "upgraded" there webmail, (major stuff up).

I always check my emails using webmail before I open my WLM, reasons, 1. Make sure they are from people I know
2. Delete any spam

I would then open WLM and download my email. Leaving the server empty.

Since my ISP's so called upgrade, I would delete spam email, empty the trash can, open my WLM, and everything would come in. INCLUDING the things I had emptied from my trash can.

Then it would leave everything I had downloaded on the server!!!!. (before you go jumping the gun, I checked the settings in WLM to ensure that "Leave messages on server" was unchecked)

I have been on my ISP's back about fixing this, first they had me re do my settings (pop3 and smtp) etc, and also recreate my account several times, then they finally admitted there new webmail was buggy.

Eventually they told me to use mail2web, which sadly I am still using, this is because they are now claiming they need to do a migration of there clients emails.

So, I have been looking at WLM as a possible solution, namely "Mail Rules", I have never in the past needed to set these. I have googled for some instructions on how to do it, but to no avail.

My problem is twofold, 1. The deleted then emptied trash can that contains the spam, is still being downloaded.
2. Emails that have been downloaded are being left on the server.

So for the time being I will continue to use mail2web, as this deletes spam and also keeps my server empty.

But I am curious as to how these "message rules" can be set up, so that I might be able to use my ISP's webmail again.

The second part of your problem should be easy to solve.
Go to accounts... properties... advanced.
Untick the box that says leave mail on server.
Will look into the first part of the problem or some other member may help.

The untick may solve problem one, also. Lets see.

Your situation has nothing to do with the message rules.

If we cannot get this to work. You may be better off with the most current; WLM 2011 or one of many other free mail clients such as Thunderbird.

Tried WLM 2011 ack ack and double ack. Reverted back to the previous version.

And already checked the setting "Leave Messages on Server" it was and has been always unticked. Except for when the useless tech's at my ISP told me to try leaving the mail on the server. All that did was fill it! (the server)

Is your setting POP or IMAP. IMAP would leave the mail on the server.

I can only suggest, another email client that you may like.

It appears that some change made by your ISP has caused the problem. It appears that starting fresh would be the best way to go.

Ok tried thunderbird, same problem, message was left on the server.

Tried Pegasus, couldn't import contacts or messages, got rid of that.

Uninstalled WLM, reinstalled it, redid my setup again.

Sent several test emails from my hotmail, yahoo and gmail accounts, nothing in the inbox on either web2mail or my ISP webmail.

Rebooted sent more test emails, still nothing .

I will give it until tomorrow, then I think I might do a recovery of my OS.

Thank you kesume, it turned out last night's not receiving of email was due to a breakdown in my ISP's email

The other option is to use a third party program like Mailwasher, which checks all your email accounts and you can tell it which are spam during the learning period. When you click the button to wash mail it will delete all the messages you have marked as spam and open your default email program and bring in just the email you want.

There is a free version as well as the paid version which has more features.

Was having some problems with my FTP not connecting, and other programmes not responding as they were. Exited mail washer still no go, rebooted, still no go.

Turned it off in msconfig, rebooted and got an error could not load winloader.exe.
