It was on a torrent site looking for a dvd copier and thus came accross a link which i downloaded. There were several files with unknown formats so i clicked on the one which said setup.exe and it was just of 21 Kb. when i double-clicked it, it gave me an error to open it with admin priviledges. So i did Run as Administrator and a command prompt window flashed up and disappeared. Nothing happened???
. i deleted that entire folder which contained all those files thinking that it was just a piece of junk. It was all good until now, then suddenly i got a pop up from Action Center(i was on win 7) saying that NOD32 is turned off. When i tried to turn it on, it didn't. I tried to open my Firefox browser, i got an error message saying that it didn't find c:\program files\mozilla\firefox.exe. Same happened with IE 8 and Google Chrome.
Soon, the following items were not found when i tried to access it:
msconfig.exe
regedit.exe
gpedit.msc
rstrui.exe
msascui.exe
mrt.exe
When i clicked on Computer, it shows Open With dialog box.
It was all screwed up. I was lost. Could not do anything.
MalwareBytes, eset sysinspector and spybot wont open either.
I pulled my flash drive and removed that folder from my recycle bin and copied that folder on my flash drive.
For a moment, i started hating windows. I felt like the virus maker won and left me in such a state that all my knowledge had failed.
I reinstalled win 7 and everything is working fine again. :D
I still saved that virus file on that flash drive, just incase some one need it.
Moral: Beware of torrents.
