zip files

Needless to say I am a computer newbie. Zip files give me a hard time. How do I open them. Also why when I try to open one why does it cause the page I am trying to open to start flopping and I can not get to the start button controls to shut it down. The taskbar is covered with the page I am trying to open. I have to shut down at the Processor. Some attachments causes this to happen also.

Processor AMD Phenon(tm) 9500 Quad Core 2.20 Ghz
Memory Ram 3.00 GB
System 32 bit OS

I use 7-zip for my zip files. Right click and extract to (You will be given options)
I find it best to extract to the same file name. You can then delete the zip file as you don't need it after it has been extracted.

7-Zip

The flapping is because you are trying to read the zip file before you have extracted it.Use 7-zip and that problem will go away

Thanks "ilikeitfree". I downloaded the zip program and was able to extract my pictures. No flopping either. Now I want to ask, When I am downloading similiar files from emails how will I be able to use this? Here again is where some of the flopping occurs. No every time but occasionally.

Just answered the question about email downloads. They cause tthe flutter screen that will not stop until the pc is shut down. Any suggestions for a fix?

Save them to the folder of your choice and then un-zip them just like any other zip file.

You can also just right click them and extract if you want to read them in your e-mail program

So what is special about 7-zip?
What should a zip do?

You zip\unzip. plus other options.

Maybe 7-Zip pays $20.00 to use it, I don't know.

I just don't know why you want to fill up your HDD with 3rd party junk, when you all ready have one installed

But I suppose 7-Zip is "FREE" But!! you only get what you pay for!!

So what is your point?

Nothing there that means much.

This is why I don't come here often, try to help and people like you get upset when someone suggests something different than your way of thinking.
This BBS is full of them.

A newbie asked a question and all you want to do is argue.

Further more I have probably forgotten more about Computer\InterNet then you will ever know.
Long before Windows 3.1.
Do you remember Big Blue?

I am not exactly a newbie but still know a problem when I see one. I have a email that is in "HOTMAIL". It has 13 pictures in it. I can see the pictures there. When I right click I do not get any selection to compress or send anywhere. When I try to download and this is just as I click the download button it starts the page flopping and it keeps this up until I shut the computer down manually at the Processor. Maybe I am "screwed up" but this thing is also. I do a lot of searching and learn a lot but some things need help from some one else. I am a 78 year old widow and still learning.

Like I posted in my first reply to you, use Windows Compress folder.
You have to create this by, going into Windows Explorer, I'm not sure where yours will open but mine opens in my Documents folder.
Then Right click on a clear space in that folder down near the bottom of that menu "choose New" then choose "Compressed (zipped Folder).
A new folder will appear with that name. From there Right click that folder you'll see all the options.

If you still have trouble let me know and we will try to beat it for you.

In your first post you were advised to download (free zip software) very bad advise, why you ask.

You're not much older than I am and I'm sure during your life you have realized that nothing in this life is free.
This applies to free software. Unless you use a well know company that is offering free software to promote their retail version.
It's not a good idea to use free software because you don't know exactly what you are getting. Maybe their is bad software Included eg. "key logger or call home" just to mention two.

I don't know your knowledge of developing software, but it takes many many hours to design it and many many more hours to write the code for it and then many many more hours to get all the bugs out of it.

So, with that being said, these people want money for their work. They didn't write the software for free for everyone to use.
They also put keyloggers and call home software that comes bundled with the free software. It works all the time in the back ground and you don't know it. Keyloggers record all of your key strokes and call home searches your computer for private things eg. your address book then sends it back home.
Then the bad guys sell this info. This is how they get their money.

I'm NOT SAYING 7-Zip has done this I'm say some software in general. You have know idea of knowing who you can trust.

I'm going to do some checking on this problem and if I can find more info I'll let you know.

I hope I didn't confuse you to much.

Again, let me know if you need more help.

Thanks, mopar. I have worked some problems out. The zip & unzip was not working but i think I may have restored it. Now this is another mystery. XP had OE. Vista has Windows Mail. In my files i still have OE files. They are all dbx's. I am sure they were all transferred when I had to buy a new computer. Question??? How do I open a dbx file? It keeps saying there is no file association. Tried to my best understanding and came up with the same answer. Is it OK to just delete these OE files and forget about them. After three years there could not be much worth keeping.

I don't know what happened but I lost my reply to you, so, if you get two, keep this one.

I think what would be a good idea is use "Help and Support" Click"Start" you'll see it there at the right, type in the word "association" this will perhaps explain it for you.

Yes if your sure you don't want them any more, delete them.

Keep in touch.

First I need to apologize for my comments, they were rude.
There are a lot of programs that are better than the default programs,CCleaner, Defraggler are a couple that come to mind.

7-Zip is another award winning piece of software.
Yes the purpose of zip files is to compress a file to save space.
7-Zip will compress to a smaller file than Winzip or Winrar
7-Zip will also handle more file types than Winzip

And yes things have moved on since Windows 3.1
