Too bad there is still no Flash Player for x64.
Until we get a 64 bit flash player, 64 bit browsers will not be fully functional.

Bad luck that you can't use Flash with it until Adobe get their act together.

Otherwise it's terrific and fast.

Ummm, you can get a 64 bit JRE and a 64 bit SDK....and I'll test again but on my first install I had both a 32bit JAVA and a 64bit JAVA side by side (or should I have said SXS?).

now, whether Fx 64bit can use it or not, that is a different story.

VectorLinux has been making x64 builds for a long time - but I never can find them making builds consistently. I wish that my favorite community edition builder, tete009 (you can search that nic in Google to find his page) would make 64bit builds - his 32 bit builds are amongst the fastest ones out there....

do you have a link for the windows 64 bit java i went to java downloads and theres no 64 bit listed

Yes there is - but you have to look for it.

Start at Java SE Downloads and click on, say, the download button beside Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6

That takes you to Select Platform and Language for your download:

The choices there are Platform, which has the following selections:

Linux
Linux x64
Solaris SPARC
Solaris x64
Solaris x86
Windows
Windows x64

I figured it would not be able to - 64bit browsers are kinda left out in the cold for now - virtually no support from any sort of plugins / add-ons. Kinda sucks, too, because 64bit Fx screams, and I even like the 64 bit IE 7....when I visit non Web2.0 sites that is...

I'm using both Minefield 3.1pre (x86) & FireFox/Minefield 3.0 (x64) recently...

Download - Mozilla x86-64 (FF/Minefield x64 install version)

FF x64's pretty fast due to no flash allowed...

as for curiosity...what's the difference between FF x86 & FF x64 version?(beside flash issues)

is FF x64 version better security than FF x86?

any thought?

Yeah, its way more secure using the 64bit version because all 32bit exploits don't work, plus because of the small userbase there are no exploits or vulnerabilitys -yet-

That, plus it is going to be fast even *with* flash, as the x86 version is written with i386 optimizations in mind (perhaps up to i586 now as I think Fx 3 won't run below Win2K) but a modern machine (Core 2 Duo / Core 2 Quad / AMD Dual/quad cores) will support a lot higher instruction sets, making it a lot easier to actually run things.

On my P4 AI used to use tete009's builds because he incorporates PGO and SSE2 instructions for a much better experience on x86 builds - a lot faster overall than just the standard Fx builds. I am still considering using his current Fx 3 build to see if there is a noticeable difference, as it is not going to make that much of a difference (I think) because of the massive amounts of raw power I now have available compared to the P4 machine.

But how much faster can you expect a web browser to go? The x86 version of Firefox is pretty fast as it is already, and do you really think higher instruction sets would help a browser render a webpage much faster? I mean, yea I do believe it will be faster, but def. not faster enough for us to notice a big difference.

Also, security issues aren't really there because hardly anybody uses x64 browsers. But once those become the norm, there will be plenty of security issues humming along. I used x64 Minefield for a little while before I decided there was no use in working with a browser that was incompatible with Flash and others, and regular Firefox 3 is just awesome now... :D

Let's put it this way - yes, and yes.

The higher instruction sets may not help in web page rendering when it comes to things like displaying images - but when it comes to processing JavaScript code, DHTML scripts, CSS, etc, yes 0- it makes a big difference.

And as for your statement that security is not an issue because no one uses it - heh - that is what they said about Fx in general, as well as many other windows apps.

But you're right - without the working flash and other plugins for 64bit browsers, there is not a major market for building x64 browsers...yet.

With the major push toward x64 OSs, and with Vista being as good as it is in x64 land, I see that market getting larger and larger every day.

It's very fast indeed, but I watch a lot of flash movies (Gametrailers), so I'll stick with FFx86 for now.

Indeed, Axon. As soon as Flash goes x64 I am going x64 for both Fx and Thunderbird- which, if you haven't taken a look at Tb3, grab Tb3a2 and try it - you'll be amazed.

I have Tb with about 6 add-ons, and whenever I hit the restart button it is back and ready always under 5 seconds, most times under 3 seconds, and occasionally it is back within 1 second or so.

It is every bit as fast and sleek as Fx 3.
