Windows update does not work and cannot even get into it

Hi all,

I recently ran a registry cleaner program (I think it was called pc tools or something) which also optimises your computer blah de blah.

Anyway, after I Optimised it and cleaned the registry, I can no longer access windows update. When I try to open it, a window very quickly pops up and then promptly disappears.

I tried uninstalling the program to undo the changes, but I think that was a wrong move. Update still doesn't work.

I went to do a system restore, but that has also stopped working. Same thing, a window flashes up but then disappears. Also, when I right click on my desktop and click "personalise", the same problem occurs. Also if I go to Control Panel-System.

I tried doing a windows repair but it said that there were no problems found. I would really like to avoid doing a full format and re-install because this computer is used at reception of the hotel my wife and I manage and any downtime with the computer can be a real pain in the backside with online bookings etc.

Anyone have any ideas?

Regards,
Scott

Hi Scott and Welcome to Vista Forums.
It seems that a software is causing this issue. Probably a virus or something.
Did you try scanning your computer with an antivirus software?
Also, try in safe mode to see if this problem persist and let us know.

HI Oboman,A SIMPLE WAY FOR SOLVING THIS ISSUE TO USE DART (

DIAGNOSTIC AND RECOVERY TOOL SET) AS A MICROSOFT RECOVERY TOOL SET.

THIS IS A BOOTABLE CD AND YOU CAN GO FOR REPAIR OPTION AS WELL AS RESTORE OPTION .

Howdy Pooch,

The first method on that page had a link to a file, but the file was no longer there.

The second method was to reinstall the WU package, when I went to install it, it said that I already have it installed and it wouldn't continue.

The third method was to reset WU manually, I went through all the steps but it still didn't work.

Hi,

Check whether the services.msc is located in c:\windows\system32

hi,

for access denied pro.you just goto c:\windows\system32\ and search for any msc file (*.msc).and then right click and shows the application in c:\windows\system32\mmc.

this error is probably due to the unknown application

However, I tried typing net start vss
It says The Volume Shadow Copy service was started successfully but when I try rstrui.exe again, it still comes up saying Volume Copy service not working.
