MSE won't update stating I am not connected to internet whilst clearly I am?

Hi there, I am running Windows Vista Home Premium and connect to the internet via a wireless router (Sky). I installed MSE a couple of weeks ago, but upon checking yesterday I found that it actually does not update (automatic or manual), instead it gives me the error message "Virus & Spyware definitions update failed. MSE was not able to check for updates - make sure computer is connected to the interned and try again", even though I am clearly connected to the internet (actually using it whilst trying to update MSE). Having read your forum I uninstalled MSE, used a clean up tool to remove any potential remainders of previous anti-spyware programs and re-installed MSE. Initially the virus update worked fine, scanned the laptop and thought problem sorted. This morning, out of interest, I tried to update the virus definitions again, just to see if it works, but no, I am now getting the same error message again...also, for quite some time now, when Windows informs me that there are updates available and I try to install these I get an error message, plus I can't log into Messenger either? Thanks!

Welcome!

Not sure I can help much, but could your firewall be blocking the requests? See if turning it off helps. If it does, we can go from there.

What anti-virus are you using? If you hadn't mentioned you also had a problem with Messenger, I would focus on dealing with MSE. However, it looks like it is a problem with your internet/network settings.

Hi Jonathan, could you please give me a clue as to what I need to look out for/change or what the settings should be in the first place? I have re-set the firwall settings to the original ones (just in case I've changed stuff unknowingly), but that did not help, also tried again to log into the Messenger to no avail. Went on the troubleshooting site, it gave me error message 80048820 (laptop clock and date are ok), it stated a problem with the key ports (?), so I tried the "repair" option but it still did not fix the problem.

This happened to me once as well as to another poster. Make sure that your clock and calendar are set correctly. Hope that this easy solution works for you.

I think that Jonathans suggestion will turn out to be the best course of action, however.
