KB979910 and KB982536 won't install

Have continuously failed to install KB979910 and KB982536 with error message 800736B2. Have tried Manual Install, Install with Clean Boot, reinstallation of NET framework 3.5 and even reinstalled Windows Update Distribution Folder with directions from MS tech. No Luck. Did a SFC /SCANNOW which stopped at 46% verification: from the log it appears to be autochk.exe and the "source file in store is also corrupted" so it can't be fixed automatically.

If the installation problems are related to the scan results how do I manually fix the autochk issue?

If it's a separate issue any suggestions?

I run Trend antivirus and Malwarebytes antimalware with clean scans. My system runs 32bit Vista Home Premium SP2.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Try booting into safe mode, and then try doing the SFC scan three times, because files sometimes aren't fixed on the first time round.

Thanks for your reply Tom. Tried both suggestions--still can't successfully update. Tried both default and aggressive Window update component resets--no good. Tried multiple SFC /SCANNOW--got stop at same location in all three cases (at autochk.exe, according to log)
I tried SFC/verifyonly which went all the way through and indicated multiple integrity violations. I'm no expert on interperting the log but did see indications of problems with both KB979910 and the windows update service specifically.

Is it possible I need to fix the autochk.exe issue first so that SFC can get to repair the later integrity issues with windows update?

Any suggestions appreciated

Thanks Tom. I only have the original VISTA installation disc that came with my Dell (which is mirrored on my D: partition). Since I'm at SP2 I can't do a repair install with the older, original OS. Think I'm stuck with doing a clean install and then downloading about 2 years worth of upgrades and reinstalling app's...yikes

Personally I would also do a clean install. This is because you are at risk of losing documents if the system files are corrupted beyond repair.

Sorry and let me know if you need any help reinstalling.

Hello,

If you really will not do a clean install at this time, I will give a try at fixing this issue, though I can guarantee nothing.

Can you please run SFC one more time and upload the latest log? We have out hands tied a bit if we cannot see the log first hand. Please follow the tutorial here: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html following the instructions in the top yellow box, then upload or paste inline the sfcdetails.txt file created on your Desktop. Thanks!

There are several things to do. Temporarily disable all real time protection (anti-virus program) etc. and try again. This is regularly the cause for this error, in particular real time cookie scanning software.

I know that you have already done some of this, but please redo it. Thanks!

Re hi
Reset the WU components and modules and ran the readiness tool. The three services were ok. Closed Anti virus completely and tried both automatic and manual installs--no luck, same error as before and no install. I couldn't get the whole compressed log folder to upload. So I left out the CBS_persist_log and managed to get the rest of the CBS folder and DPX folder on here. Hope this is ok. Appreciate your's and Tom's help.
Bob

Your SFC shows that the autocheck is the only fault:
SFC Scan said:
Cannot repair member file [l:22{11}]"autochk.exe" of Microsoft-Windows-Autochk, Version = 6.0.6002.18005, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_INTEL (0), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type neutral, TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral in the store, hash mismatch

Your checksur and checksur.persist log shows that there are no problems.

I don't have any knowledge of what the DPX logs show, or what they are made by, but they both seem to have a lot of failed, which can't be too good.

I also don't know how to interpret a CBS, so sorry I'm no help here.

Richard, perhaps you could help me here, what is a DPX log? And what does it show? And what does a CBS show?

Thanks Rich

Tom

Hello,

I cannot have a full look at all of the logs now, but I have had a look. There is however, a common error in your DPX logs, however, a difficult to fix error.

Can I confirm that you have tried a manual install (via download from Microsoft Website) for these probablematic updates?

I will upload a clean copy of autochk.exe tonight.

The error you are getting is unfortunately, not easy to fix, and rare.

We will first try the autochk.exe fix, and go from there.

Thank you again for uploading all of those logs. Can I be a pain and ask you for one more log that I did not previously ask for? C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate*.log

Thanks!

Richard

Hello,

I have included a new autochk.exe. Please just replace your copy with this new one.

Then please run SFC one more time, create and upload a new sfcdetails.txt if Integrity Violations are still found, upload the other log I asked for, and report on how your computer is working.

You will probably have to take ownership and change the permissions of your autochk.exe first. To do this:

  • Navigate to the file (C:\Windows\System32\autochk.exe) and right click on it and select Properties.
  • Under the Security tab, click Advanced.
  • Under the Owner tab, click Edit.
  • Click "Other Users and Groups".
  • Click Advanced.
  • Click "Find Now".
  • Scroll down and double click on Everyone.
  • Click OK THREE times.
  • Click Edit (now on the standard file Property window under the Security tab).
  • Click Add.
  • Click Advanced.
  • Click "Find Now".
  • Scroll down and double click on Everyone.
  • Click OK.
  • Single click on Everyone and then tick the "Full Control" box under Allow.
  • Click OK TWO times.
Thanks!

Richard

EDIT: LOL, forgot to upload the file!

Hi Richard

Yes I have tried manual install (several times) with download from windows update site.
Replaced autochk.exe and reran sfc...the scannow kicked out at 47% verification with the usual message about windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation. However I don't see the error message in the detail log about autochk. The very end of the CBS.log has this:
2010-06-25 02:00:02, Error CSI 000000c6@2010/6/25:07:00:02.904 (F) d:\longhorn\base\wcp\cdf\cdfp.h(887): Error STATUS_SXS_INVALID_ACTCTXDATA_FORMAT originated in function Windows::Cdf::Implementation::cdf_GetBlob expression: Blob->Type == ValueType

The attached zip file is the windowsupdate.log--it was kinda big lol.

Also, I got email today from Microsoft support engineer that they are sending me an upgrade disc for VISTA with SP2--so an inplace upgrade is an option now if we can't fix the issue.

Thanks again for your time and help.

Bob

Just an update for anyone following this thread. Finally got the repair upgrade Disc from Microsoft with SP2 on it. Found I could not turn off all Windows services as suggested, I think it had to do with the corrupted system file(s) and the NET framework. Went ahead with upgrade anyway which went uneventfully except at the end indicated it had to repair NET.frame 4.0.

All my programs & files were intact, except my Trend Internet security couldn't open its firewall. I tried all the Trend suggestions, but solved the problem by unistalling and reinstalling Trend.

Reinstalled about 60 updates, including KB979910 and KB982536, successfully without single failure!!! Reran SFC /SCANNOW which went completely through with no integrity errors.

I have been told in the past by a Dell technician that there is a tendency for file corruption if you sleep or hibernate Vista. I usually shut down completely but my wife occasionally forgets and hibernates the system. Don't know if this was a cause of the original problem or not--maybe the subject of a different thread--just thought I'd pass my experience on.

Thanks to Tom and Richard for their help, I learned more than I wanted about log files.
