Hello,
My PC is an HP Pavillion dv6500 notebook with Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP1. In trying to upgrade to SP2 (and failing), I realized that my Windows Update was not updating anymore...neither automatically nor manually. After some patching and restarting, some files have successfully downloaded while others are still not. For each one of these files that don't download, I get the error 80070490. The same error is given when I tried to update my PC to SP2 with a manual download from the Microsoft site.
I suspect that this error is due to corruption from some malware that I got rid of many months ago. Most forums said the easiest solution is to repair Windows or do a system restore, but Windows was pre-loaded on my comp and I don't have the CD, so that is not an option...and I do not have a restore point prior to the corruption. I have tried stopping and restarting Windows Update to no avail. I've also performed the System Update Readiness Scan, but it did not fix all of the errors. The checkSUR log of my errors is given in the post immediately below this one.
Can anyone help with this? It seems that as I browse the forums that this error is tough to get rid of and each case has its own separate solution.
