Help Browser Internet Speed

:D Hello Vista guru's,

I'm new here with a problem that has popped up last night. Up until last night my web pages and everything was loading up in my Firefox browser pretty fast. Today things are loading up slow and with I go on to a news source to watch a video...the videos stop and go making the news video not worth watching.

A couple of minutes I was looking at something on here where it said to use "cmd" command to get into something. It was set on "ultrarestrictive" and I changed it to "normal" but haven't seen much difference in how things are working.

The other day I downloaded UTorrent on my computer but today I uninstalled it.

Could UTorrent have messed something up?

Thanks for any help :D

Have you cleaned the temporary internet files. I wouldn't think utorrent would change any of your internet settings.

I would run a complete diagnostic on your computer. Run all ad-ware and spy-ware software you have. Next run your anti-virus program. See what all that comes up with. Here are some to use if you dont have any.
Adaware 2008
Spybot S&D
CCleaner
Then I would defragment system. That should really clean up your system and make it run better.

Hey bassFisher,

I ran a couple of spy-ware program and my anti-virus programs. I only came up with one minor spy-ware problems with my spy-ware program and nothing with my anti-virus program. I did a full defrag of my computer which took forever to complete and that seems to be my problem was. I must have to about 6 hours to run and complete. I went to visit youtube and now the videos play without any lag time or problems!

Thanks for you idea on resolving my computer problems!

Not a problem glad I could help. Tip: There are some freebie defragers out the and ones you can buy that are a lot faster than MS built in version. Also some registry defragers. I use Auslogic disk defragementer and Auslogic registry defragementer which are both free. Your registry gets junked up too and needs to be cleaned out every now and then. I personally run my utility software apps once a week, though the standard advice is at least once a month.

Hi Onlyme. Bassfisher has some extremely good advice there. Just one word of caution with Registry Cleaning though. There are many so-called registry cleaners out there to remove unwanted entries. You have to know what you are deleting however. Too many systems get nuked by running these things willy-nilly. Best thing to do is , Don't. Run a defrag on them by all means, but be warned about "cleaning" your registry.

Yep, NormCameron is right. I forgot to mention that in my post. If your not 110% sure of what your doing than don't do it. It can make things worse than when the problems begain.

Hey BassFisher,

I check these programs out the you mentioned (Auslogic disk defragementer and Auslogic registry defragementer).

I did download and use Ad-Aware 2008 and CCleaner. Both worked pretty good.

Do you know of a good program that a person can run to check out their internet connection and maybe do some tweaks with? I downloaded one but uninstalled it after it was loaded with sooooooooo much crap on. Sale you this or that....

Thanks for you help and if you have any further information

Hi NormCameron,

I did do a registry cleaning with CCleaner that BassFisher suggested to use. I didn't notice anything that went wrong after doing so.

I did save whatever was cleaned as some kind of file. If I did have a problem, I could re-install it with the file that I saved...right? :D

And ahhh...thanks for your response and help! :)

Here is a good site to check and verify your connection speed, your download/ upload speeds.

Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test

As for tweaking it, I'm not to sure about that. I believe that is determined and set by your ISP and is fixed. I may very some but set at a certain speed. Though I could be wrong about this as the wife so often reminds me that I wrong all of the time...LOL.

Check it out and see what it tells you. I use Road Runner in my area, cable broadband. My avg. is some where in the neighborhood of 6800 mbps downloading and 367 mbps uploading speeds. Where my ISP set my speed at 7.0 Gb (7000mbps) and the upload is set at. Well I'm not sure what their upload is set at. I'll have to check that out. I can pay extra an go to 10.0 Gb of download speeds but not worth it for me. There is a place on this forum to place your download speeds at and see what every one else is running at. You don't have to post but you certainly browse and have a look at it.

As Bassfisher6522 says Speedtest.net is a good site. There are a number of tweaks you can perform on your settings. However most of these involve changing registry settings, they don't always have the effect you desire, and the speed gains are marginal at best, and generally are limited by your ISP anyway. Can you identify the problem you are trying to solve with system tweaks?

Hi Onlyme,

Changing you interconnect settings can sometimes make things worse , and putting them back can be tricky. There are a couple of apps. that claim to do do this and create a backup to reset if you need to.

Totalidea Software :: Product :: Tweak Windows Vista - Vista Tweaks - TweakVI - Tweak-VI - Tweak-Vista - TweakVista - TweakXP - Tweak-XP - Tweak XP - TweakUI - Outlook Backup - Outlook Notes - FireTune

and auslogics boostspeed (15 day free trial - should be long enough to test it out - you can see what changes it has made )

Speed Up Your Slow Computer with Auslogics Boost Speed

Interestingly, I got the MS PC Advisor and the first thing it did was increase maxconnections to 10 ( normally would have done it myself, but had just reinstalled - anyhow not using IE as default )
Anyone want to try this - available for download till 24 oct - the modules do pretty basic things, but it's a trial, so you can bet we'll see some of them in 7 - download from here - need to answer a few questions about Windows
Microsoft Advisor

Hope it helps

The problem that I'm trying to tweak is how web pages load. What is happening now (after I thought I had fixed with BassFisher's advice) is when I go on a web page the pictures load/lag slow. You get like an "X" on the picture for about 30 seconds, then the pictures show up on the web page. That is the first problem.

Second problem is say like when you go on a news site that has videos that you might want to watch is that they lag. Meaning that it takes a bit for them to start playing and then when they are playing they stop and go. This stop and going happens throughout viewing the video. That gets annoying while viewing a video.

I usually catch up on the news by checking out a few news sites and watch a few videos should they catch my interest when I checking out the news.

All of this just starting happening within the last 4 or 5 days ago.

I'm on Cox Cable with just the standard services which seems pretty fast to me. I rarely download anything...but I did try downloading some stuff with Utorrent for a few days then uninstalled Utorrent the other day.

Does what I typed make any sense to you in what my problem is?

My computer is about 4 months old. It is a laptop HP Pavilion dv9825nr with 4 gigs of ram. 17 inch screen with a NVIDTA GeForce 8600M GS video card with 512MG of memory. This is my first laptop and bought a half way decent one that would last for a while. I like it and think I made a pretty good choice in buying it.

As far everything else on my computer....running normal with no notice of any slow downs in speed.

So, what do you think? :)

I've been to Speedtest.net and the speed is about what I'm paying for with Cox Cable.
Next time I go to SpeedTest.net I'll write down the speeds to see what you think.

Thanks for the help! :D
