Downloaded Files are 0 KB...Need help

Hello, I have an HP laptop running Vista Home Premium 64-bit. It's actually been relatively fine for me until the last few days. I was having some problems editing video files and couldn't figure out why, so I updated to service pack 2. Around the same time, although I honestly cannot be sure that it was because of the update, none of my downloads will work. I believe it happened once or twice before I updated my sp but now I can't download ANYTHING. It's bizarre. The entire file will download and the file will show download progress just like normal. But, once complete the file shows up as 0 kb and doesn't open. I've tried using firefox 3.5.3 and IE 8...both do the same thing. I have also checked my permissions and made sure that I am allowed access to all of the folders that the documents are saved in. Nothing seems to help.

I really don't want to have to format/reinstall windows since I have quite a bit of stuff I would need to backup. Any help would be EXTREMELY appreciated. Thanks.

You could also try a downloader such as Orbit and download the file to your desktop.

Try Orbit Downloader, and see if it can download the files.

Run sfc/ scannow at an elevated command prompt, then use Glary Utilties to clean up any rubbish from the registry. Also, run a Malwarebytes full system scan.

I have run a full system malwarebytes and didn't find any problems.

Could you explain how to run the first part of your answer? Also, I won't be able to run Glary Utilities or whatever since I can't download the setup file.

syc or system file checker is run from a cmd pormpt. start>search>type cmd>in cmd window type sfc /scannow. that verifies the system files. I dont believe its a system problem but more likely an installed app.

When you run sfc it will verify and replace any missing or corrupt system files. If that doesn't work we will try something a lttle more in depth

The sfc scan is giving me the following...

"You must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility"

I checked my user accounts in the control panel and I am listed as an Administrator. I'm not sure what the deal is.

My Computer

Right-click cmd in a start menu search, select run as administrator.
