RE: Windows Mail / Vista Home Premium

Apparently some update has changed things for Windows Mail. Now, the pictures and such don't always come through.

Someone has suggested to go with Windows Live Mail. I don't know much about this so don't know what to do.

I have many, many folders within my email program (Windows Mail) where I keep important correspondence and verifications. I copy these folders to my external hard drive about once a month for safe keeping. Can I do that with Windows Life Mail?

I would really appreciate some help with this, so I'm going to give thanks in advance.

Niklet,
Everything that you can do with Windows Mail, you can do with Live Mail.
This is what you do.
Make a system restore point. Then get windows live mail. If you do not like it, with system restore you can get Windows Mail back.
In addition, you are secure because everything is backed up.

You have helped me a lot, but can I press a bit further. I thought Windows Live Mail was a web-based email program.

This machine uses Vista, and then I have a laptop with Windows 7. I came across a page for Windows Live Essentials that stated this could no longer be downloaded for Vista. Is Windows Live Essentials a part of, or tied to Windows Live Mail?

The download that you refer to is a nice piece of software. It is the most beneficial for people that have more than one email account. It allows you with one click to have all your email, from all accounts, download to your computer. Once downloaded you can even read them when you are not online.
I must offer an apology. My prior answer was dealing with Windows Live Mail, the email client, that I just described above and not with the actual email. To be honest, I do not know of email knows as Windows Live Mail. I only know of the email client known as Windows Live Mail 2012. If you would kindly give me a link for Windows Live Mail. I will be of much more help in my next post.

This is what I downloaded for my Vista machine: Download Windows Live Mail 2011 from Official Microsoft Download Center
I haven't done anything with this yet because I was waiting to hear from you.

Another link I clicked on took me to the page I show in my attached screenshot. This says "Windows Live Essentials" is no longer available to download for Vista.

So are we dealing with two different things here --- Windows Live Mail and Windows Live Mail Essentials??? I did some other Googling for desktop email programs and a couple of the pages listed Windows Live Mail.

I am confused now by what I've read and what you answered back. You said your original answer was dealing with Windows Live Mail the email client that you had described --- and then said you don't know of email known as Windows Live Mail. I'm really sorry, but can we go back to the beginning and start over?

LOL, I see that we are having communication problems.
Lets start from the beginning.
When people talk about email, they mean something like yahoo mail, gmail etc. This is the actual email.
The link that you gave me in your last post was not email. It is the email client that I had discussed earlier and in my first post. It is the updated version of Windows Mail, which is not longer available, due to security problems.
There are other equally good clients which you can use, however
Top 11 Free Email Programs for Windows - About Email
Windows Essentials is a package of various Windows Software, only Live Mail pertains to email, however.
I will stand by my original statement. Windows Live Mail is an email client and I do not know of an email known as Windows Live Mail. As far as I know Windows Live Mail is just an early version of Windows Live Mail 2011.

What you have to do. Make sure that you have email. It can be from your ISP provider, or Yahoo or Gmail or Outlook, etc. you can choose anyone that you want. You can then use it as web mail or use an email client to download to your computer.

First, I appreciate your patience and hope it's holding!

I might just be getting a glimmer of understanding. Let's see if I'm getting closer.

Right now my email is set up through my ISP, which is our local telephone company. I can access my email through my webmail, or through my Windows Mail desktop program.

So, are you trying to explain to me that Windows Live Mail is a desktop email client/program, but that it will have to be set up through my ISP, just like my present Windows Mail is?

Apparently I can use Windows Live Essentials 2012 on my Vista machine (but not the 2011). Am I correct in believing that Windows Live Essentials INCLUDES the email client Windows Live Mail?

If I use what I downloaded from this link (Download Windows Live Mail 2011 from Official Microsoft Download Center), is that just the Windows Live Mail client without the other frills associated with Windows Live Essentials? I think I might be getting confused by the names.

Right now my email is set up through my ISP, which is our local telephone company. I can access my email through my webmail, or through my Windows Mail desktop program. Yes this is correct

So, are you trying to explain to me that Windows Live Mail is a desktop email client/program, but that it will have to be set up through my ISP, just like my present Windows Mail is? Not Correct You have your email through your ISP. You are not required to have anything else. You can get your mail through the website. If you want the client you can choose from any that I have mentioned in my previous post. If you choose a client you have to set it up yourself, that part is easy and we can help.

Apparently I can use Windows Live Essentials 2012 on my Vista machine (but not the 2011). Am I correct in believing that Windows Live Essentials INCLUDES the email client Windows Live Mail? Live essentials includes the email client, but you can go to live essenials and download just the client.

If I use what I downloaded from this link (Download Windows Live Mail 2011 from Official Microsoft Download Center), is that just the Windows Live Mail client without the other frills associated with Windows Live Essentials? I think I might be getting confused by the names.
You are correct, but I do not think that Live Mail 2011 still works with Vista. This is right from MS
Windows Essentials 2012 system requirements - Microsoft Windows Help
That link is just the mail, but per MS it no longer work with Vista.

You know, I think I've got a grasp on it and then I re-read and there is something escaping me. You must think I'm a real dummy, but I hope you'll stick with me until I get this figured out.

Is/was Windows Mail what you would call an email client? Was Outlook Express an email client?

I understand that I don't need anything but the web to get the mail through my ISP, but right now, it is connected with my Windows Mail program -- right? My ISP did help me set it up originally. I am using my ISP's email server name, settings, etc. in the Windows Mail program. So will I do the same in the Windows Live Mail program?

When you go into Windows Mail/Tools/Accounts and then select Mail, it looks like screenshot 1 (zip file).

Then I click on pop.kadokatelco.com and on Properties and it looks like screenshot 2. Then screenshots 3, 4, 5, 6.

I clicked on the edit button because I don't see the email.zip file I attached.

I do not think that you are a dummy. Actually, I think that you are anything but. Anyone who tries to learn shows intelligence.

Both Windows Mail and Outlook were email clients. Outlook was one of the first. I had it when I got my first computer in 2000. I now have Windows Live Mail 2012

Yes that is all correct

I took the files out of the folder and will just attach them individually ... maybe. As I'm previewing this, all the attachments are opened above, and they are all listed below under "Manage Attachments" so I hope they are still there after I click on the submit. That zip folder was there before too, but after I clicked on the submit button it didn't appear.

I think I understand it now. Thank you for your help and patience with me.

So, do you feel I should be able to install this Windows Live Mail on my own?

Also, I don't do the messenger thing at all. I don't know what all is included in this Windows Life Essentials so I'd like to ask what you would recommend.

If I were you the first thing that I would do is make a system restore point. System Restore is a picture of what you have at any point in time. If the Windows Mail does not turn out the way you like or you have problems with restore you can go back.
This is all that you have to do. Download just Live Mail. If by mistake you download all of Essentials, no harm done.
After the download, enter the same information that you showed me in your screenshot. Then you should be all set. If you do encounter problems, you can always come back here for help. You know that I will be here for you.

I installed it, but I'm still a little lost. Just to be safe I decided to keep my Windows Mail account as my default until I understand what I am doing.

There is a Sync button on top. Should I sink everything?

Something that puzzled me is that I sent a test message. That did not go into my Windows Mail sent folder, but rather appears in my Live mail sent folder.

Another thing I'm wondering about is where the Send/Receive button went. I know how to send, but what do I click on to download mail.

I have a little program I use called PopTray. My mail goes there until I open my Windows Mail. When I open PopTray and then select to run email client, it opens Windows Mail rather than Windows Live Mail. I assume I need to add this Windows Live Mail account to that and possibly make it the default.

I think maybe I need to make the Windows Live Mail my default???
But if I make Windows Live Mail my default, will the mail still download into my ISP web mail account?

Can you give me some pointers here, please? As you can plainly see, I'm floudering around pretty badly!

If you have only one email account not necessary to sync.

Something that puzzled me is that I sent a test message. That did not go into my Windows Mail sent folder, but rather appears in my Live mail sent folder.
Live Mail Supersedes Windows Mail

Another thing I'm wondering about is where the Send/Receive button went. I know how to send, but what do I click on to download mail.
In theLeft Hand Column, if you are at the inbox, you are set to see all that is received. Every time you click on the Live Mail Icon you see the inbox. If you are at the inbox and you want to check it again at the top, you should see send/receive.

I have a little program I use called PopTray. My mail goes there until I open my Windows Mail. When I open PopTray and then select to run email client, it opens Windows Mail rather than Windows Live Mail. I assume I need to add this Windows Live Mail account to that and possibly make it the default.
You will have to add it. You will eventually get rid of Windows Mail.

I think maybe I need to make the Windows Live Mail my default???
But if I make Windows Live Mail my default, will the mail still download into my ISP web mail account?
You can set Live Mail to: Delete the web mail messages after download or keep them in the web mail until you manually delete.

Can you give me some pointers here, please? As you can plainly see, I'm floudering around pretty badly!

I would gladly give pointers, but there is not really much more to say. If you have questions just post them here. I will give you all the help that I can.

Well, I think I've taken several steps backwards.

1. Is Outlook.com and Windows Live Mail the same thing? When I go up to the top in Windows Live Mail and click on Help/Get help with mail, it takes me to Outlook.com

2. There is no send/receive that I can spot anywhere. Both accounts show but I can click on the Inbox in either and there is no send/receive.

3. I know I was receiving my test emails in Windows Live last night, but today no messages at all come into the Windows Live Mail. When they download they are all still going to Windows Mail.

4. I can't get that PopTray thing set up. I am attaching creenshots of the window for my existing account and the one I tried to set up for this Live Mail.

5. Where do I go to set Live Mail to leave messages in the webmail until I manually delete them?

I don't know what gives here but once again the files I attached did not attach.

Also, starting today I kept getting this popup from WinPatrol. Again, I will try to attach screenshot. I keep clicking on NO because I don't know for sure what is going on here.

I've tried 4 times now and can't get this screenshot to appear. It's warning me about wanting to change a file type associated with Windows Mail/Windows Live.
