Vista Giving Me All Sorts Of Errors And BSOD's

Hello,

Let me start off by giving the specs of my machine. It's a Gateway FX that I bought from Newegg this past June and below is a screenshot of the specs. And here is the Newegg Link to the computer so you can see more specs.

I'm having a lot of problems with my Vista right now and was wondering if someone here might be able to help me solve my problems. Let me give you a quick run down of what's been happening. About a week ago, I went to bed and put my computer in the low-power state (see below).

powerstate.jpg

I usually do this at night because I hadn't thought it would be a problem. I had two programs up and running when I did this - Firefox (version 3.5.3) and Microsoft Word 2007. The Word document was just blank and I left this up often because with my new computer it only came with a trial version of Microsoft Office and I didn't want to keep wasting my trial usages each time I needed to open it. Either way, I woke up the next morning and my computer had shut down. I didn't really think anything of it. I figured maybe updates had been done and it had shut off or something (there was no power outage). I turned on my computer for the day and that is when my problems began.

I opened up Firefox and was just checking my gmail and such when Firefox closed. I didn't think anything of it and opened it back up again. It closed shortly thereafter again and I thought something might be up. I ran CCleaner and Spybot - Search and Destroy and SB-S&D didn't find anything and CCleaner just cleared my cookies and temp files and such. I started getting all sorts of error messages and BSOD's. Below are some of the screenshots that I took of some of the error messages I got.

hostprocessa.jpg

spooler.jpg

taskscheduler.jpg

windowsmediacenter.jpg

I know there were more of them that I could take screenshots of because of various reasons. Also sometimes they would come up and then I'd get a BSOD so I couldn't take it. And obviously I couldn't get a screenshot of the BSOD. But I do remember that one of the BSOD's did say something about Memory.

I did go through my programs and uninstalled different items that I didn't need such as Opera, a couple of games that I don't play ever, and I also uninstalled the Microsoft Office 2007 trial that I have because the number of trial usages that I had left was like 2 and I don't have the money to buy it.

Overall I'm not sure what is causing this problem. I am not very computer savy but I can follow directions if someone needs me to do something else. I've thought about calling Gateway but thought I'd give you all a shot first instead of wasting hours on the phone waiting for tech support from them.

Second to last, below are the error boxes I got two times after I got a BSOD. This is the information it had in the boxes.

Lastly, below is the information my computer gave me at one point about DEP. I don't know what it means but I figured I'd post it here anyways.

What is Data Execution Prevention?

Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a security feature that can help prevent damage to your computer from viruses and other security threats. Harmful programs can try to attack Windows by attempting to run (also known as execute) code from system memory locations reserved for Windows and other authorized programs. These types of attacks can harm your programs and files.

DEP can help protect your computer by monitoring your programs to make sure that they use system memory safely. If DEP notices a program on your computer using memory incorrectly, it closes the program and notifies you.

Any help that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. I'm deeply aggravated by my computer because I can't do anything without it giving me fits. Thanks for reading this and any help you might be able to provide.

Attached are my minidump files.

I can try and upgrade to SP2 but I'm not really all that familiar with drivers and what exactly I would need to upgrade. I'm not computer savy at all and I'm not familiar with how drivers work and how one would go about upgrading them.

jason, just try to follow archie's instructions -> go to the driver download pagehe has kindly provided you, and download it. once you have downloaded it, open the .msi or .exe file. follow the instructions onscreen.
updating drivers is really like installing another program.
Hope this helps,

Alrighty. Here we go. I downloaded and installed the drivers. The computer restarted like NVIDIA required and my computer came up on my TV. I have a 32" Sylvania TV attached to my computer using an HDMI cable as a second monitor because I watch movies off my computer from time to time. This wasn't a big deal. When my computer was fully booted up, I tried to find the NVIDIA area of my computer where I originally designated and setup 2 monitors and designated one as "1" and the other as "2". I couldn't find it but wasn't too worried. I went to restart my computer and there was a red button with the "Lock" and "Restart" area and such that said something like "Closes all programs running, shuts down Windows, and then turns off your computer." I selected this option as it seemed the best and was highlighted red.

My computer turned off and right when it was about to actually shut off, I got a BSOD. The second paragraphish area said "PFN_LIST_CORRUPT". The computer turned back on and I pulled up Firefox to come report that. My computer then got another BSOD that said (this one I might have gotten the last word wrong but I'm pretty sure it was this) "SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION". I turned my computer off and removed the HDMI cable from the back of the TV so I could have my computer report to my normal monitor. I then came here to report what went wrong.

I'm not sure where to go from here but I have upgraded the drivers based on that link that archie123 posted. Thanks.

Edit: Below are the two error codes I got after the BSOD's. They are in order of which BSOD I got first.

ok i always advise updating drivers before trying to debug dump files , especially service pack 2 , when microsoft released SP2 all the driver manufacturers wrote thier drivers to fall into line with SP2 and vice versa. For example a new driver could conflict with an SP1 install or an SP2 operating system could conflict with an older driver.

thats why i recommended you update to SP2 and all new drivers , this most likely will not solve your issue , but it will eliminate the possibility and we can take it further , dump files are an insight into your issue but they are often very vague , if all your dump files throw up the same issue/fault then we can nail it straight away , however this is very seldom the case at which point we have to start suspecting hardware.

this is when it becomes a bit of a long drawn out process but we CAN help after a little input from you :)

so you really need to update to SP2 and update all yuor drivers first :)

your other issue all the messages shutting down stuff looks like a DEP issue you didnt say wheteher or not you disabled DEP like i recommended but for now lets just get your drivers up to date , give me a sec and ill link you to the drivers on gateways site

Ok so I'll update my drivers and I'll figure out how to upgrade to SP2. I'll post back here after I've updated all the drivers on that page and after I've upgraded to SP2. Thanks.

So I've finally got SP2 downloaded and all the drivers downloaded but have what may be a dumb question but I figured I'd ask anyways. Do I need to install the new drivers before SP2 or should it be the other way around or does it matter? I just don't want to screw anything up.

I dont think you can screw it up, dont worry. There isnt any hard fast rules, but I would install the SP2 first because it may even have the drivers already in it. If something still doesn't work after sp2 then you can install a driver for it. vista, and win 7 are pretty good at picking the right driver.

when you are done with sp2 re-boot and see if everything works. If not the place to look is called device manager (type device manager in search) look for a device with a ellow traingle on it. those are the "unkown" devices.

hope this helps and let me know if you need helpwith any of this

What add-ons are you using?

One dump that I analyzed had no faulting module but pointed the blame solely at firefox. It stated it could not read the faulting driver name

RTKVHD64.sys looks like a Realtek Video or audio driver, thats over a year old, update that.
HDAudBus.sys another sound driver dated 07'
Another dump points to Ntfs.sys

Pool_Corruption? with explorer.exe as its running process...

Hold on while I debug a few more.

I just de-bugged another dump in your attachment and it states that "crashreporter.e" I'm assuming that is the same thing as .exe has memory corruption. I'm going to attach a system shortcut. Please, download it, and run it as Admin. It will save a log to your desktop name sfcdetails upload that file here :)

Alright. Two things. I'm trying to install SP2 but I'm having problems. I got the error message below the first time I tried to install it.

installnotgood.jpg

Second... I ran that System File Checker and after having to run it several times because it wouldn't finish, it finally did but it didn't put a file on my desktop. Here is what the run window gave me.

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

The system file repair changes will take effect after the next reboot.

C:\Windows\system32>
I've also attached a ZIP file of the CBS log it is talking about.

I'm still trying to get SP2 installed but we'll see.

EDIT: It did put a file on my desktop. I just didn't see it. I attached it now.

It would be helpful if someone more experienced would chime in. But I would definitely say make 2 back ups of ALL data then do a system recovery back to factory settings.

But I would wait for someone to confirm that action before you did it. As that SFC log was pretty dirty.

Run a full malwarebytes and superantispyware scan. Something has corrupted the files. Then run these commands in an administartor command prompt - open up the start menu, type cmd and press ctrl+shift+enter. Press enter after each line:

driverquery /v > %temp%\drivers1.txt

driverquery /si >> %temp%\drivers1.txt & start notepad %temp%\drivers1.txt

Then, in notepad save the files as .txt and upload it.

I don't even know what the winsxs file is so I don't think so. I just did a search for it and it is in the folder C:/window/winsxs and has a bunch of folders called all sorts of things with all sorts of dates. I should mention that I hadn't done anything that I can think of before all this had started happening. Maybe a week prior I had gotten an email from what I thought was eBay and I clicked on the link in it and Firefox told me it was a bad site and I closed it immediately. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
