Possible Overheat?

Hi guys,

Last night my internet failed (which every now and again it does anyway, so im not that bothered about this problem) but anyway, to get it working again you have to force a switch off and then on again. This was when the problem occurred. The Windows Error Recovery options scrolled in, line by line, rather than just appearing all at once, then the screen went black, the fan appeared to turn off and just the power light, charging light and caps lock light (????) were still on. I tried to boot a couple more times, which all seemed to work for the same amount of time as the first one before crashing the same way. On the final time i tried it the fan began being excessively loud and i switched off as i thought something was at breaking point.

This morning all seems fine and in eventvwr there seems to be no errors listed for last night, however, for this mornings log, it says that both my two AMD Turion 64's speed was being limited by system firmware.

Any ideas why this happened???

Thanks

Macca

Please provide us with these reports so we can get an idea of what's happening: http://www.vistax64.com/crashes-debugging/282419-blue-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html
I understand that you're not having BSOD's - but these reports will help us see what's going on inside of your system.

In general, an overheating event will have the exact symptoms that you describe - to include no records in the Event Viewer. But there are other problems that can have the same symptoms, so a look at the reports requested above may give us some hints.

Here you go

please note: the error with the ISATAP adapter is expected as I have disabled it as i do not require it to be enabled

The most important file is missing, the MiniDump. Please read the instructions again, giving attention to step 2, run as administrator.

Typically I have an AMD K8 Range processor and that list only goes to K7, but my laptop has always felt very warm and noisy compared to the HP Pavillion in the house

I have closed some programs and got it down to 73C which seems a little more reasonable

I would suggest to experiment. You have the temp software now, do what is best for your rig.

Please do not disable the ISATAP adapter. Rather it must be Uninstalled - that way any corruptions that it causes will be removed (if disabled, the corrupted driver may still be loaded within Windows). It will reinstall itself if needed, but most people don't need it so it doesn't come back (it's involved with the translation from IPv6 to IPv4.

This sort of problem is common with the following IPv6 to IPv4 adapters:
- ISATAP
- Teredo
- 6to4

MSINFO32 shows a lot of BSOD errors - mostly revolving around AVG and your networking devices. 19 are related to your AVG, 18 are related to your networking device(s)

Also, you have way, way too many programs starting on a system with only 2 gB of RAM. I'd suggest trimming your startups a bit in order to have a more responsive system.

If not specifically using a feature of the Catalyst Control Center, please uninstall it. It has had problems in the past with Win7 systems.

Please do this also:
Anti-Virus Removal:
Please do the following:
- download a free antivirus for testing purposes: Free AntiVirus
- uninstall the AVG from your system (you can reinstall it, if so desired, when we're done troubleshooting)
- remove any remnants of AVG using this free tool: AVG - Tools download
- IMMEDIATELY install and update the free antivirus
- check to see if this fixes the BSOD's

Finally, please download fresh copies of the Vista drivers for your network devices from the Realtek support website (DO NOT install until you've uninstalled the old version!!!)

Wired connection: Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller
Realtek

Wireless connection: Realtek RTL8187B Wireless 802.11b/g 54Mbps USB 2.0 Network Adapter

Very few System Errors in Event Viewer, but quite a few errors in the Application log files. But nothing specifically points to anything (other than the previously mentioned network issues)
IMO it's either a hardware problem or a Windows problem.

First try these free diagnostics and stress tests:
H/W Diagnostics:
Please start by running these bootable hardware diagnostics:
Memory Diagnostics (read the details at the link)
HD Diagnostic (read the details at the link)

Also, please run one of these free, independent online malware scans to ensure that your current protection hasn't been compromised: Malware (read the details at the link)

Then, if the above tests pass, I'd try these free stress tests:
FurMark download site: FurMark: VGA Stress Test, Graphics Card and GPU Stability Test, OpenGL Benchmark and GPU Temperature | oZone3D.Net
FurMark Setup:
- If you have more than one GPU, select Multi-GPU during setup
- In the Run mode box, select "Stability Test" and "Log GPU Temperature"
Click "Go" to start the test
- Run the test until the GPU temperature maxes out - or until you start having problems (whichever comes first).
- Click "Quit" to exit
Prime95 download site: Free Software - GIMPS
Prime95 Setup:
- extract the contents of the zip file to a location of your choice
- double click on the executable file
- select "Just stress testing"
- select the "Blend" test. If you've already run MemTest overnight you may want to run the "Small FFTs" test instead. (run all 3 if you find a problem and note how long it takes to error out with each)
- "Number of torture test threads to run" should equal the number of CPU's times 2 (if you're using hyperthreading).
The easiest way to figure this out is to go to Task Manager...Performance tab - and see the number of boxes under CPU Usage History
Then run the test for 6 to 24 hours - or until you get errors (whichever comes first).
This won't necessarily crash the system - but check the output in the test window for errors.
The Test selection box and the stress.txt file describes what components that the program stresses.
Two other video stress tests (may be more stressful than FurMark):
Video Memory stress Test - МИРNVIDIA / Утилиты / VMT
Artifact Locator - МИРNVIDIA / Утилиты / Artifact Locator
Sorry, but I don't read the language that this website is made in.

Then, if nothing specific shows up (hardware), I'd suggest backing up your stuff, wiping the hard drive, and reinstalling Windows in order to rule out a Windows problem (only get Windows Updates and an antivirus). If the problems still occur, then it's most likely a hardware issue.

My Computer

Its been a while since I last posted here, but anyway.
The problem is a lot better now that I have switched from AVG to avast on both the networking and overheating issue.
One thing that I would still like to know more about is;
Does windows check the temperature and then cut if too hot on boot?;
This is because this overheat problem now only occurs when I restart the computer (eg. it is hot when it is restarted, rather than a boot from cold,) and the laptop appears to get no hotter than it was before a restart so I am positive something is being checked on boot that isn't all the rest of the time.
Normally now I put my PC on sleep (during the day) and hibernate (overnight) and the problem doesn't occur when starting out of that either

Any Ideas?

Macca
