Blue Screen has appeared...

Hi there,

I've been encountering the dreaded BSOD recently. It started yesterday when I returned home after a weekend away. I'm not to up to speed on OS matters so I wonder if anyone could suggest a course of action?

Bascially my laptop blue screens within about 5 minutes of starting in normal mode. This does not happen in safe mode. I've tried to figure out what even precedes the crash but I can't quite pin it down - except that it does happen when I try to install anything new. As I say, it also seems to happen within a few minutes if I'm just surfing.

I've tried the following so far:
Installing Vista Service Pack 1 - blue screens.
Checking for updates using Control Panel > Windows Updates - blue screens.
Using the System Update Readiness Tool to check if I can do either of these things - blue screens.

I've tried using safe mode to do the above, but I can't install anything in this mode.

I'm using Vista Home Basic. The laptop is a HP Compaq 6720s with an Intel Celeron CPU and a 32 bit OS. I don't have the Windows install CD, as the laptop was pre installed with the OS when I got it 2 years ago.

That's all I can think of right now. I hope someone can help, really would prefer not to have to buy a new laptop right now!

thanks in advance!
