BSOD - Error: 0x0000c1f5- Can't recover using CD

Hello,
I have searched the forums for some guidance, but I can't seem to find anything similar. I read the instructions to post the dump file, but I can't get onto my computer to do so. I hope someone can help!

I have a Toshiba A305-6872 running Windows Vista. A few weeks ago I was getting multiple errors and crashes that led me to believe there was a faulty hard drive (recurring bad sectors, crashes, etc). I ran memtest and the memory is fine. Not knowing what else to do I ran a hard drive diagnostic from the Western Digital site. The quick test showed an issue. I backed up all my information and purchased a new HDD (same as old, but more storage. Western Digital Scorpio Blue - SATA, 5400 RPM,350G).

Last night, I installed it and used the recovery disk ordered from Toshiba to install it. It was up and running, re-booted fine. I began installing some updates, but not all. When I turned it on this AM, I got a BSOD. Error: 0x0000C1F5 (0x8194B000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). Now, every time I turn it on, it wont' even load past the Miscosoft progress bar. It goes automatically to a BSOD. Thought I might have to wipe clean and start again, so I entered BIOS (F2) and changed it to boot Recovery Disk from CD. It won't boot. Show me that my windows didn't start correctly and asks me to start repair, but results in blue screen. SAme with starting in safe mode.

Any suggestions on what I can do? I'm at my wits end!

Thanks!
Mel

Hello,

Sorry, I thought that I included all the info about my computer when I signed up and posted, but I guess I edited it incorrectly. Here is the information requested:

I was running Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit.
It is the original installed OS on the system.
It is the OEM version.
The laptop is approximately 3 years old.
I had the original installation the entire time until 2 weeks ago when I reinstalled with the Toshiba Recovery Media (Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit) on the old hard drive. When I replaced the hard drive last night, I used the Recovery Disk also.

Unfortunately, I cannot get the computer to load windows in any capacity, so I am unable to download or run the .exe included in the link. If I can get it up and running with the new hard drive, I will do it ASAP. So far, every time I load (from new hard disk drive installation) I get the BSOD with error 0x0000c1f5.

Does this help at all? I'm at a loss.

Thanks,
Mel

One more thing, when I got home I was able to remove the new hard drive and put the old (faulty) one back in and it will load windows without the BSOD, but it is failing.

I am unable to load windows OR do a clean install from the recovery disk with the new hard disk in.

Thanks for the quick reply and I'm sorry to be a pest.

I am using a different computer to find a solution. I was under the impression that when I ran the minidump file, you needed my computer's configuration to be the same as when I get the BSOD (which is with the new hard drive). I am unable to load Windows with that configuration.

The only way I can run Windows and access your file is if I use the old hard drive (the one that I want to get rid of) to do it. Would that be ok? I will go swap back to the old hard drive and run it, then post. I just wanted to make sure that was okay!

Thanks again!!

First
You are not a pest. You can have as much time as you need. All we ask in return is a big smiley if we solve the problem
I really would not want to see you put the problem hard drive back, but those reports are very important.
Let me look at your error codes for a while and see what I can do.

Hi,

Look here for the stop code: -

Stop error message when you start a Windows Vista-based computer: "0x0000C1F5"

There is a Microsoft "Hot fix" for that code which you can download from the link above.

It appears to be related to the "New" disk you have installed, Windows XP or "Vista Without an SP".

As per Richards post the cause is: -

This issue occurs because the Common Log File System (Clfs.sys) driver does not fix the $TxfLog file when the file is corrupted. In addition to the Stop error message, Windows Vista may not start during startup until the offending disk is removed from the computer.

Hello again,

Thanks so much for this info. I found similar sites and information earlier today but for some reason, I have been unable to wipe the "New" drive clean and re-install Vista. The CD Recovery Disk isn't working (it will if I have the old/faulty hdd in, so I know the disk works). I will shut down everything and reassign the comp. to boot from CD/DVD drive. I did this earlier, but like I said, it didn't work. I don't know why. It ends up skipping it and going to the "new" hdd and then fails to the BSOD.

If I can't get it to work, as you suggested, I will swap in the old drive and post the info.

Thanks for your help. I thought I was going crazy for a while there...at least I know I was on the right track. I'll get back ASAP with an update.

Ok. Here is an update:

I am currently using the computer with the old (faulty but working) HDD. Since I am unable to load the New HDD without the Error, I ran the program using the old HDD and hopefully that can shed some light on the situation. With the old HDD, the laptop is working perfectly fine.

I also did a few things to see if I could figure out where the issue is.

Old HDD, will boot Recovery CD. Will boot Normally and in Safe mode.

New HDD, will not boot Recovery CD. Will not load in Safe mode (stops at disk.sys and then get BSOD/Error)

No HDD, will boot Recovery CD (I tried this method hoping that I could plus in the new HDD after I got the
CD started and the computer would recognize it and I could wipe it clean, but that didn't work. Wishful thinking.).

I'm still in the same spot. I am unable to wipe the new HDD clean and re-install (as above links suggested). I cannot get the computer to load in any mode when the new HDD is installed. It worked last night, now something is screwy.

Here are the files...let me know if they give you any ideas!

Thanks,
Mel

The reports give 2 clues one indicates memory the other your anti virus. You said that you have tested memory. If you have not used memtest86 and run for 8 passes. Post and I will give the test again.
Unistall your anti virus with the uninstall tool
The in its place, download and use Microsoft Security Essentials
Then test.

KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000008e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
happening.

I did run a memtest, but you are right, not for 8 passes. I'll start it up and let it run now.

So, no norton? I'll uninstall. Thanks - I'll re-port when the memtest is complete!

As a side note, I just spoke to Western Digital - the guy said I should just return the drive and get a new one, but it sounds like there are some other clues you are seeing, so I'll finish up here and see if we can fix it or it might happen again...

Thanks,
Mel
