Random BSOD

Gday again fellas,

My PC BSOD while I was afk, I checked the event logs and the only critical event has been The application (Windows Media Technologies, from vendor Microsoft) was hard-blocked and raised the following: This version of Windows Media Technologies is incompatible with or has been superseded by this version of Windows. For more information, view the information at the Microsoft web site. back in June of last year.

I have absolutely no clue as to what look for in a minidump, so I have attached it.

UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP (7f)
This means a trap occurred in kernel mode, and it's a trap of a kind
that the kernel isn't allowed to have/catch (bound trap) or that
is always instant death (double fault). The first number in the
bugcheck params is the number of the trap (8 = double fault, etc)
Consult an Intel x86 family manual to learn more about what these
traps are. Here is a *portion* of those codes:
If kv shows a taskGate
use .tss on the part before the colon, then kv.
Else if kv shows a trapframe
        use .trap on that value
Else
.trap on the appropriate frame will show where the trap was taken
(on x86, this will be the ebp that goes with the procedure KiTrap)
Endif
kb will then show the corrected stack.

The reports that you have submitted reveal clues to the cause of your problem. They do not give a definitive answer. The more reports that we receive the more clues are made available improving our chances of finding a solution to your problem. Each remedy suggested must be performed regardless of placement in this report or other variables. You may have to experience several more BSODs until the final answer is discovered.

If overclocking restore normal settings

SFC /scannow

Update outdated listed drivers. If I have inadvertently listed any Microsoft Drivers, they can be ignored.

How to Find Drivers
search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone - will help you search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- - if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.

Gday rich

I have installed the Microsoft Security Essentials, although I have to admit I am reluctant to uninstall KIS 2011 as I had to pay for it.

I sent them an email, asking if there was a fix or a patch they might have. And I received this response :sa:

Hello,

Can you please uninstall the following programs from your computer via the programs and features area of control panel?

Acronis True Image Home 2011
Ad-aware 2007
Auslogics Disk Defrag
Easysaver
MalwareBytes Anti-Malware
Media Add-ons For Acronis True Image Home
Plus Pack For Acronis True Image Home
Smart Recovery

Microsoft Security Essentials needs to be uninstalled.

Please go to
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe and download the Norton Removal tool.
Run this program and it will uninstall any traces of your previous installation of Symantec products (Norton).
You may have to restart your computer for any changes to take effect.

Once you have removed all of these programs your Kaspersky product should work correctly.

My response to them was :-

Hello

Acronis True Image Home 2011, is one of two backup programmes I use (It is also soemthing I HAD TO PURCHASE)
Ad-aware 2007, sure not a problem
Auslogics Disk Defrag, it is quicker and more efficient than the Windows defragger
Easysaver sure not a problem
MalwareBytes Anti-Malware picks up malware that KIS 2011 misses, but sure not a problem

Media Add-ons For Acronis True Image Home, is one of two backup programmes I use (It is also soemthing I HAD TO PURCHASE)
Plus Pack For Acronis True Image Home is one of two backup programmes I use (It is also soemthing I HAD TO PURCHASE)
Smart Recovery sure not a problem

Now as for the Microsoft Security Essentials, I installed that, AFTER the random BSOD's, I know I shouldn't have to anti virus programmes installed at the same time, so I have disabled KIS 2011, until what I was hoping for was a fix.

I will not uninstall Acronis True Image Home 2011 and it's addons, as stated it was a programme I had to purchase, the same as I had to purchase KIS 2011, something I do not want to uninstall, but bloody hell surely you can find a work around for me?

I am sure I am not the only KIS 2011 user out there with programmes that MAY NOT be fully compatible with KIS 20111

Oh that and also this, it is clearly a KIS 2011 driver problem

I dont know if they are right or not. Posssibly if you remove half of your software your computer will work without BSODs, I dont know.
I do know that if we can fix it by using the free MSE, without service change to set up and no annual charge and keep my software, I know how I would go.

lolz yes they want me to remove like half of my software, as I said in the email the inconsequential things I do not have a problem unintalling, however things such as Acronis which I paid for, I do not and will not uninstall.

Also if you read the last sentance of the email :-

Once you have removed all of these programs your Kaspersky product should work correctly.

They give only a "should work correctly"

That and the fact my BSOD's are random (happens sometimes after a reboot, and just the once when I had left everything open and running for two days).

For the moment I am going to give MSE a whirl, my only grizzle about it, is it doesn't have the customisation for scanning, that I would like, its either a quick scan or a full scan. With KIS 2011 I had scheduled daily quick scans and a full scan once a week.

But
The money you spent for Kas is gone. But at the end of the year you no longer have to pay the anuual fee. I think that I rather save that fee than have customized scanning.

Yes true, as I said I am giving MSE a whirl, see if it BSOD's on me at all, if it doesn't all good.

I still have 10 months of KIS 2011 worth to go, and at the end of that time I will not be renewing it :D
