BSOD while trying to reload OS from D partition

First off, I hope I got this in the right spot. I am writing this for my XP PC the vista is in a world of hurt. I know very little about computers, but I am learning fast, more or less.. I was getting BSOD in DEC '10, and made the mistake of having a friend reload the original factory OS from the D partition, at the time it worked well until I started adding in the updates needed to get SP1 and then on to SP2. None of that went well probably due to my lack of computer knowledge. I continued to get BSOD and that was the time to ask for help, or better yet back in DEC.. I read so much and tried so many things that I think I have killed the beast. At this point I was trying to reload the original factory OS from F 11 recovery, I was 53% in with 5 minutes to go when I got the BSOD I hand copied the info from the screen because nothing else I have tried works any more. I don't have recovery disks..This is what came up... STOP 0x00000024 (0x001904ab,0x8c7373ec,0x8c7370e8,0x86e7a1b8) clfs. sys address 86e7a000, datestamp 4549acbc..
I wouldn't blame you if you wrote back and said lost cause, but I want to fix this unit and learn from my mistakes.. This is a HP Vista Pavilion M8200n PC AMD Athlon 64x2 32bit, 500GB HD 3072 MB sys memory, 2007 Product # GN551AA#ABA Thanks for any help you can give me.. Islandboytoo

Ok
Here are the various causes of code 24. These come with the warning that the next BSOD may give other causes. These reports are like puzzle pieces, each one bring us closer to the answer.

STOP 0x00000024: NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM Usual causes: Disk corruption, insufficient physical memory, Device driver, Indexing, Resident antivirus, backup, defrag programs, Disk/Drive failing/failure

Download memtest86 and test RAM
www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html
Run for 8 passes
If passes try a good stick in each slot for 3 passes
If fails do the same for 8 passes.

Please remove any CD virtualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%. They use a driver, found in your dmp, sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs

Use this SPTD uninstaller when you're done:

Uninstall your current Anti Virus and replace with Microsoft Security Essentials.

Run the upgrade advisor to help discover hardware problems
www.microsoft.com/Windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx

Test Hard Drive HD Diagnostic or this test Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

Based on my experience, I would check in this order

Hard Drive
Anti Virus
Memory test
Remove Alcholol 120%, Daemon or any other vitrualization programs.

WOW, OK First off can I do all of this from safe mode, providing I can get into safe mode?? All the rest of your advice I have very little knowledge of, and I will have to research it all to try to administer these implementations. I have never seen anything called Alcholol 120% or Daemon Programs on this machine. May I ask, is there any other way of wiping the hard drive clean and reloading windows seven on this machine? All this will take me some time, so if I don't remedy this I really want to thank you for your help... islandboytoo..

First its a real pleasure to help you; I can tell you appreciate the service that the Forum provides.
Alchohol and Daemon are software that you had to download. If you do not know what they are, lets assume that you do not have it. If I had your reports, Iwould be able to tell.
If you want to wipe the machine there are two ways
Do you have an install DVD?
You can have your friend reinstall from the back up, if still possible.

I would go this route, however. It may temproarily fix your computer, so that we can get the BSOD reports for a permanent fix.

If you create a recovery DVD, you may be able to boot to recovery options
Create Recovery DVD

The Vista recovery disk is used to boot Vista when it won't boot - to run Startup Repair, System Restore, access a Command Line, Recover using a Vista Backup Image, etc.
System Recovery Options

If Vista will not start now, boot the Recovery CD to run Startup Repair which automates System Restore as well as numerous other tests including System File Checker which can repair system files which are not corrupted beyond repair.

If Vista still will not start, try booting into Safe Mode to run sfc /scannow to repair System files.
Special Thanks Given to Seven Forums.

Below is a bulletin distributed by MS to explain the start up procedure when Windows will not boot.
  • Startup Repair. Startup Repair is a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain problems, such as missing or damaged system files, that might prevent Windows from starting. Startup Repair is located on the System Recovery Options menu, which is on the Windows Vista installation disc. If your computer has preinstalled recovery options, it might also be stored on your computer's hard disk. For more information, see Startup Repair: frequently asked questions and What are the system recovery options in Windows Vista? If your computer does not include Startup Repair, your computer manufacturer might have customized or replaced the tool. Check the information that came with your computer or go to the manufacturer's website.
  • Change restart settings in safe mode. If your computer is stuck in a loop where Windows fails, attempts to restart, and then fails again repeatedly, restart your computer in safe mode and select the Disable automatic restart on system failure checkbox. For more information, see Advanced startup options (including safe mode).
  • Reinstall. If no other options have solved the problem, and you are sure that your computer's hardware is functioning normally, you might need to reinstall Windows. A custom (clean) installation of Windows will permanently delete all of the files on your computer and reinstall Windows, so only use this option if all other recovery options have been unsuccessful. After the installation, you will need to reinstall your programs and restore your files from backup copies. For more information, see Installing and reinstalling Windows**.

I thank you so much for your help. I think my first mistake was letting my friend do anything for me. I DO NOT have any recovery disks. I have used the Factory OS on the "D" drive partition for restoring in the past. I have NO restore point to go back to, and I have tried everything that vista recommends doing to restore the system. I think I have a corrupted hard drive or something happened to memory, although I did do a memory test using vista doing two passes and it said memory was ok. I have already shut off the loop restart. and the machine will not stay on long enough to try and make a DVD backup disk.. I will try some thing and get back to you as soon as I can, maybe in a day or two and let you know what I find out.. again thank you for all the help.. If I had known I would be disabled by my retirement age I might have taken up learning about these things before I turned 63 years old.. When I was young I didn't want anything to do with modern tecnology.. Thanks again Rich.. Islandboytoo..

There is no problem with a torrent, if you just download what you are trying to and do not get any surprises like virus. I have helped many with the information that I have given you. Use the XP machine, and follow the directions carefully.

Ill be here for you Don. Take your time, understand what has to be done, ask questions if needed and this will get done.

Worst case scenario: For cost (about $25.00, from the Company that sold you Vista preinstalled) you must buy an install DVD and we will reinstall your Operating System. I do not think that will be necessary, however.

Thank you! I downloaded an iso windows vista 32 bit repair disc. I powered on the computer put in disk and nothing happened. the redder moved up and down in speed for a short time and then just sat Idle nothing came up on screen, I restarted computer with recovery repair disk in and tapped F-8 for safe mode and again nothing.. the only thing I can get to come up on the screen not using the repair disk is the logo HP with esc=set up menu, F-11 recovery etc. but that is all, restarting and hitting those keys get no responce either. nothing else is working, it won't even give me a BSOD. I guess it is time to go for your segestion of Worst case scenario: For cost (about $25.00, from the Company that sold you Vista preinstalled) you must buy an install DVD and we will reinstall your Operating System although I am not sure what you ment by (Company that sold you Vista preinstalled) Islandboytoo

You have Vista in one of two ways
You went out and bought a DVD and you installed it. If that is the case Microsoft has to send you the DVD for cost
The seond way is that it came with your computer. In that case call the computer Manufactuer, Dell, HP, etc.

Ok I understand now, Windows Vista OS came with the computer. I know this is a dumb question but when trying to get a replacement version of Windows Vista, will it or should it come with all the fixes, up dates and service pacts on it?

When you put the CD in the drive, did you set the boot priority?
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/205005-boot-priority-change.html

It is most likely that you will have to install all SPs, and updates yourself, but you can ask if you order the DVD.
As an alternative, for about $100 more you can buy a Windows 7 DVD. If finances allow that is what I would do. Get an upgrade Seven DVD.

That sounds like the right thing to do ( windows 7 that is) Could you tell me exactly what to get? Is it possible to get a copy with no adware on it, like just the OS, I don't think I need a pro copy, I think I can afford to put $150.00 US into the OS for this old machine, it would be worth it to me as this unit will be my learning media.. Thanks again Rich, you don't know how much confidence you have given me for working on these new tec machines. If it were a 1958 4 barrel carb or an 18 speed tri star truck tranny it would be no problem at all.... Islandboytoo

You can buy a Windows Seven DVD, upgrade version. Most people use Home Premium and it is all that is needed. There are other versions. That choice will have to be yours.
Click on all the tabs, compare prices and you will get the one that is right for you. May I suggest that the lowest edition you consider is Home Premium. I and most of the other members are very happy with that
Compare Windows - Microsoft Windows

There is no adaware (its called bloat). Its just the OS.
After you get it, join the Seven Forums, I am there too and can help you install.

Rich, I'm back! Ok I got into set up menu with the boot CD/DVD I down loaded from the ISO, I set the Bios to CD boot first, and into advanced safe mode. but the screen kept coming back reading err2err3_ Then missing registry!!! So out with the old and in with the new. I got a new copy of Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade Designed for windows Vista... Question: Do I need to try to get back into Bios set up and put the order back to hard drive FIRST.. CD/DVD SECOND.. Or just leave it alone and insert new Win 7 upgrade CD?? Iboytoo
