System Restore Nightmares

I run Vista HP SP2 32bit. For months, although I can manually create restore points, they disappear without any further input from me, and without changes to the system, such as cleanmgr.exe or turning System Restore off. :sa:

I have 3 Gb of RAM and a 250 Gb hard disk with three partitions, C:\, D:\ and E:\ along with the DVD drive.

I have hunted for months online for a solution to this problem that stops short of having to do a system re-install, because that takes 2 days, and, as we say in Ireland, I couldn't be arsed with that!

I have set the Microsoft Shadow Copy Provider Service to auto start and also the Volume Shadow Copy Service. Despite this, these services do NOT run automatically at start up and require to be manually engaged. With my limited knowledge of Vista architecture, I am presuming this problem is what is causing my restore points to vanish. I have not interfered with the amount of disk space which Vista allocates to system restore.

I downloaded two disk imaging programs so that I could take an exact snapshot of my C:\ drive, to be stored on partition D:\, to be used in the event of a BSOD or other system failure. Neither program could make a copy of my drive, both reporting that they were unable to read from the disk (this was after disk analysis and getting to about 20% of the imaging process before the error was flashed up).

I am, therefore, completely unable to back up my system. Obviously, this is a critical security risk which needs to be resolved. I back up copies of my files to the cloud, so am not worried about those at this point. However, I would like to be able to use system restore normally, and also to start using a disk imaging programme for extra system programme and data security.

Can any kind soul please point me to an easy-to-understand solution?
I want to consider re-installing my copy of Vista only as a last resort.

First a number of questions if you don't mind?
What AV do you run?
Do you have any anti-malware programs?
What security programs, do you have?
Wen was the last time you did a FULL SCAN with both AV & anti-malware?
A number of AV programs have been known to wipe clear restore points, or prevent them from running!
If you have not done checks for a while:-


First, to assist in the elimination of possible virus and/or malware.
I would ask you to please use your Anti-virus full scan program facilities, making sure, you have updated the software first. Please advise us of the results.

Secondly, please download:- malwarebytes Malwarebytes a Malware searching program, again, an updated full scan. Notify results please. Both these programs are Freeware

I use AVG 2011 for virus and malware. It does a full system scan every day. No infections reported. I also use ThreatFire Behavioural Analysis sofware which examines programs for suspect activity. I also scanned my system with Malwarebytes and ThreatExpert Memory Scanner - no infections detected.

System File Checker, this makes sure that all the system files are where they should be. The sfc /scannow command scans all the protected system files and replaces incorrect, corrupted, or damaged versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
In the results area, right-click cmd.exe, and then click Run as administrator. You may/will be prompted to type the password for an administrator account. Click Continue if you are the administrator or type the administrator password. Then, click Continue.

At the command prompt, type sfc /scannow, and then press ENTER.
Please take note of space after sfc.

The scan may take some time, so be patient. Windows will attempt to repair any corrupted or missing files that it finds.

No guarantee can be given that the SFC scan will be able to repair all the damaged, incorrect, corrupt etc., files.

If faulty files are found, please run sfc /scannow 3 times.
Please upload CBS.LOG results in your next post.

I ran the sfc /scannow from the cmd twice as an administrator.
It gets to 69% completed on each occasion then a message appears saying
'Windows Resource Protection cannot complete the operation requested'.

The scan then aborts.

Where is CBS.LOG? I cannot copy and paste from cmd.exe

I ran sfc /scannow again after using the msconfig utility and following the instructions given to the letter. It still gets to 69% and aborts as indicated in my previous post.

However, The Microsoft Shadow Copy Service and Volume Shadow Copy service are now set to autostart and are registered as running when I check under services.msc.
In addition, the restore point I created manually today has not as yet disappeared despite repeated restarts.

This does not mean the system restore problem is resolved, because I was able to hold onto two restore points recently after a few shutdowns which then subsequently disappeared. However, I believe this to have been due to the failure to autostart of the two aforementioned services, which, as I say, now seem to autostart ok. Perhaps that will resolve the system restore points disappearing?

I followed the advice given about cbs.log. and renamed the Windows Sidebar settings to setting.ini.old: I am uncertain as to what this has actually done and rather wish I hadn't made the changes now!

The sfc /scannow process still fails as indicated above.

I await your further advice with gratitude.

I just re-ran system restore and the restore point has vanished again!

Are the Microsoft Shadow Copy and Volume Shadow Copy services supposed to run constantly in the background? If they are, mine are set to autostart, but when I check the services manager they're back to not running again.

Why can't operating systems (especially Vista) be a little less corruption and BSOD prone?

Have you tried booting into safe mode, I think you should try and lets see if it is doing the same thing heres how.

I would disconnect from the internet, turn off my security and then try the safe mode, you might have some luck there.

I am uncertain how safe mode would help with system restore, since there are no restore points on my C:\ drive due to my system restore problems.
What would I do once the laptop was booted into Safe Mode?

Don't mind that it's supposedly for BSODs; it collects a ton of information which is useful in many situations, not just BSODs.

I have a ideas for a couple of places to look; perhaps there will be clues in there.

I tried to run System Restore in Safe Mode. As I suspected, it failed, due to lack of restore points as hereintofore described.

I will try to run and post the report requested.

I ran these programs/reports as requested. As they contain information about my system, I am not sure whether I am comfortable making them available for public scrutiny. Can you direct me to the part(s) of the report(s) that contain the data you require to decide whether there is some sort of corruption of System Restore on my system?

I note that Microsoft Shadow Copy and Volume Shadow services are back to not starting at boot, despite being set to do so. I have also noted that the system made a restore point automatically when I uninstalled AVG2011 in favour of MSE. However, it quickly disappeared, as is the norm of late.

It seems that I may be due a complete re-install in the near future if I want to be able to use system restore and disk imaging software for back up purposes. Unless, of course, you can help me nail this problem down and resolve it.

Windows is what I'm used to, OS wise. I just wish Microsoft wrote tighter, more secure, smaller and less problem prone operating systems!

If I may can you get into the event viewer, to try and get the errors that are happening to your system, even if you can only 2 or 3 at a time or maybe even one, these also will tell us some things about what is happening to your system.

Hello I understand that might have some reservations about the information that is in your computer as we all do, giving us certain info on your system helps us make a sound judgement as to how to repair system. The things asked for are not passwords of anykind that takes a special software to get those. The things we requrie have nothing to do with whatever files you have, no douments of any kind, no security passwords, no logon passwords, and if anyone does put up this kind of informtion on the forum they delete it right away. We are looking for corrupt files, registry errors etc so we will know the best way for you to fix your system...

Don't worry, there's nothing private in those reports; have a look through a random OP's thread HERE and you'll see there is no security risk.
