BSOD on start-up

Hi
Whenever I boot my laptop up I get a BSOD when I log into my account. I can only boot-up in safe mode.
I get an error message which is 'IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL' which I have no idea what this is about.
I have done some research about it but it seems every crash is different for each person so can somebody have a look at my crash dump files.
I've uploaded the latest one but I have about another 20 if required.
Thanks

Hello sooty1892 and welcome to the forums

From what I can see, your BSOD appears to have been caused by:

ntoskrnl.exe

Seeing as you can't boot properly, you will have to do the following in Safe Mode:

1. Open the start menu
2. Type cmd and right click on it and select Run as administrator
3. In command prompt, type:

sfc /scannow

Make sure you include the space between the c and the /!

Leave this to run, it should take about 15 minutes or so and if it finds any Integrity Violations then run it again 3/4 times and post back the results.

Tom

EDIT: Do you have a Vista Home Premium installation disc?

I've just run the scan and it says 'Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.'

I've uploaded the file (if it helps) but I havn't run the scan again, should I?

I do have the installation disc if required but I was hoping to not do a re-installation.

Thanks for uploading the log, I forgot to ask you to. The log looks fine to me and everything has been repaired that it found.

Do you still get a BSOD upon start-up?

I wasn't planning on using it to do a re-installation, I wanted to repair your system from it but we'll get to that later :)

Hi
It appears to have worked. I have booted normally and there has been no crash and I've just done a few restarts to test it and there has been no problems.
Thanks for the help :)

Hi
The problems has started again :/
I've just run the sfc /scannow in command prompt and it said it repaired some corrupt files.
I've also run the repair function from the installation disc but it said it didn't find any problems.
Here are the latest crash dump file and the log from the scan.
Can you please have a look at then
Thanks

Oh dear, let's give it another shot then :)

This one also says that it has been caused by ntoskrnl.exe.

What anti virus software do you use?

Im only running windows defender on start-up, although about every week I run spyware doctor, malwarebytes and spybot search and destroy to check for problems.

If I were you, I would install Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) because you aren't currently running software that provides real-time protection. This is a free anti virus and it is highly regarded across this forum:

Virus, Spyware & Malware Protection | Microsoft Security Essentials

(The reason I asked which anti virus you used is because anti virus software is notorious for causing BSODs)

But back to your problem, can you download MemTest86:

Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

You will either need a blank CD or USB drive to burn this to as you will need to boot from this.

If you are wanting to boot from a CD, then you will need to download the "Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)" and extract the .ISO image from the .zip file and burn it to a disc using a program such as InfraRecorder

If you are wanting to boot from a USB, then you will need to download the "Download - Auto-installer for USB Key (Win 9x/2k/xp/7)" and run the program and it will make a bootable USB drive of MemTest.

Its much easier to boot from a CD so I'd recommend that option!

Leave it running overnight or something and let it make 7 or so passes.

Tell me if it finds any problems!

Tom

I've run the memtest over night and it got to 8 passes and there were no errors found. I don't know if there is a report on the system which I could upload but I couldn't found one.
I've also installed Microsoft Security Essentials but I'm still getting BSOD :(

Okay that's good, it means that you haven't got any problems with your hardware (specifically your RAM).

In your first post, you said that there were 20 other minidumps, can you upload all of them for me please? Just whack them all in a zip folder and upload it for me please :)

One of your minidump files shows pctgntd184.sys (part of the PCTools suite) as the cause of your crash.

Remove this software with Revo Uninstaller: Revo Uninstaller Pro - Uninstall Software, Remove Programs easily

Then reboot your computer and see if it works

In the mean time, I'll have a look at the rest of your minidumps :)

Also, do you use any wireless remote controls or anything else that would use Infrared with your computer?

One of your minidumps was caused by hidir.sys which is a Windows driver for "Infrared Miniport Driver for Input Devices"

And yes, i've got an infrared reciever in my laptop, therefore I have a driver for it but I don't have any devices which would use infrared, so I never use it.

Okay, everything looks fine there :)

Do you mind if we disable it? You can re-enable it at any time you want, I want to see whether this is causing the problems.

If its OK to disable it, then open the start menu, type services.msc and click on it, find the Infrared Miniport Driver for Input Devices entry and right click on it and select Properties. Change the start-up type to Disabled. Reboot your computer and see if this works

Ok, I've disabled the Human Interface Device Access, which has the Infrared Port under that, as well as the USB ports.
I then rebooted but I still got a BSOD after logging in, but this was about a minute afterwards instead of straight away, don't no if this is important :/
Heres the latest minidump file.
