when i tried to download the printing diagnostic utility (is this the patch i needed?) it said the publisher could not be verified. How i can be sure it's from a safe source?

Please forgive my flippancy, but can you read - you where not supposed to download the diagnostic utility - you where supposed to download the driver. Thats why I gave you that link.

The message you received is a typical sign of the poor quality of HP products. They created it, but failed to comply with the global standard of digital signatures that verify the authenticity of a download. You'll get that same message again with the driver.

Don't worry about the authenticity, because the download page I provided took you directly to the HP website - the same blokes who made your printer. Attempting to download a driver from anywher else is when you should use caution.

This is the very reason why I have not used HP products for now nearly 3 years - their technical support is pathetic!

I find your comment extremely rude - hardly flippant - and when i went to the link it gave me 3 options and i was confused. 'flippancy, but can you read - you where not supposed to download the diagnostic utility - you where' or do you mean were?!
Thanks anyway.

My Computer

Again, my apologies for being rude. You caught me on a bad day.

But anyway, when you click on the link I gave you, it takes you to the HP website, which provides 3 links, of which you want to click the first one, to download the driver. Clicking that link in turn takes you to another page, where you can proceed to either install immediately, or download the drivers.

If you scroll the page down a bit, you'll see in step 3 ther are 2 buttons - one to "Install Now" and another to "Download Only". You want to click on the "Download Only" button which will download the file "AIO_CDB_Full_Non-Network_enu.exe".

The link is this ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software8/COL18486/mp-47767-1/AIO_CDB_Full_Non-Network_enu.exe

Installation Instructions
  1. Click the Download only button.
  2. Note: Make sure the HP All-in-One device is "Not" connected to the computer before running the download file.
  3. Click the Run button to begin the download.
  4. Note: File is compressed and may take time to expand and run.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to begin the installation process.
  6. Click Finish.
  7. Connect the USB cable between the HP All-in-One device and the computer, then turn on the HP All-in-One device.
  8. Your product should be ready to print.
This has the advantage of once downloaded, you can write the file to CD for backup, in case you ned it again in the future.

Hi dzomlija I don't really think you were rude but even if you were, I would gladly accept the rudeness along with the amazing help you just gave to gillround I have a friend with an Epson Printer "stylus R 200"
and he just can not get his printer to print the way the picture is shown on the sceen Ei: wide part of the picure (4x6) running up and down. His printer insists on printing the picture wide side running left to right, thus cutting off part of the picture on both sides. Trying to change from "portrait" to "landcape" doesn't work as it is greyed out. When I looked at the Epson site their recomendation is to use the Vista driver, would you happen to know a fix for this. I also tried to update the driver using Vista, but no luck.
You can be a rude/flippant as you would like with your answer, if you have an answer, ( I swear I will not be affended in ay way) ( tongue firmly planted in cheek) I figured it is worth a try. If not so be it.

I'm guessing you tried the download at the Epson site for "Epson EasyPrint v3.10A"? (Epson Stylus Photo R200, Drivers & Downloads - Technical Support - Epson America, Inc.)?

If this still gives a problem, then I'm afraid you're out of luck. Either way, Epson seems to give better support than HP! Epson tagged the R200 as "discontinued", but they still have a Vista driver for it. Good luck getting a Vista driver for a discontinued HP printer!

This is again another reason why I like Canon products. I have the Canon Pixma IP3000. And all the print features and tools that I had available in XP, I also have in Vista. Even the little extra utilities (like Easy Photo Print or CD Label Printer) have been updated to work with Vista.

Seriously, Canon have some fine products (their Pixma series printers and LIDE scanners in particular) and the technical support to go along with them is second to none.

Yes I did download the easyprint 3.10A, for him.
I can't beleive how you seem to bend over backwards to try to help people ( supplying the link and everything). I sent an email to Epson and if they do help I will respond here.
Like you, I only use Canon products. My recommendation to the friend with the Epson, was to buy a Canon. His son-in-law had the Epson and I guess he was impressed with it.
I own a run-in-the-mill i350 and even that works with Vista. I am thinking of buying a better Canon in the near future, I just love the price of the cartridges for my Canon i350. I wish I could find another printer of that type. The cartridges just hold ink....no printed curcuit board, hence the cheap price.
I Thank-you so much, dzomlija for trying. I appeciate the time you spent.

If I'm not going to try my best, dbknox, then I have no business being here.

I ditched Epson, HP and Samsung a long time ago in favor of Canon printers. Their Pixma range is truly remarkable - The ip3000 I have is over two years old, and is still using the original heads that I bought it with. It's been serviced once to replace the excess ink resevoir, but thats just about it.

The most truly amazing aspect that has cemented my faith in Canon is the fact that they still provide Vista (both 32 and 64-bit) support for a product that has for all intents and purposes been discontinued. No such luck with HP! I think I last used an Epson with my 386 back in the late 80's...

Aftera little research and crusing around various forums I bought the Canon MP970

a beautiful printer that I eneded up networking through the router. Worked right off the bat and is now used by my New Vista 64bit and my old XP laptop.

My Computer

It makes me happy that my findings over the years, Re: Canon being the best choice are agreed with here. I was thinking I was alone with this assumption.
I have tried other printers over the years and have found that Canon was always reliable.
I told my friend ( the Epson R 200 owner ) that his Epson printer was discontinued and suggested trying a Canon, he emailed me back and asked what I think of HP printers. Sigh!!

I have just been through the almost same install nightmare......
Vistas 64 bit driver (for me) works. I tried to down load from HP and nothing seemed to work at all. So deleted all printers then pluged in the 200 and Vista installed its own driver. I have just printed from Publisher a advert on a photo paper 10cm High and 150cm wide. In Publisher it was viewed landscape in the printer preferences in Publisher was set to (hang on got to go and check)............ from Print - Properties - opens Epsons requester, then in Tab main (bottom right printer pic) set to Landscape.
Inserted paper 100cm edge in 150cm up the paper holder and it printed correctly. I have a 'postcard' print 150cm wide and 100 high. Worked for me.

Publisher made an add on a postcard 100cm high 150cm wide. laidout in Publisher 150 wide 100 high. From print menu (hang on need to check)....................................then button properties, opens up Epsons requester. Tab Main, pic of printer in bottom right 'Landscape' check box checked. Paper inserted into printer 100cm edge first (as picture) and printed my 'postcard' add.
Works fine for me.
Pitty the HP5l dosen't.....................but thats another story.

Hey SteveM, good going! Maybe this means that all is not lost.
I tried the above and there was no way I can change the "portrait/Landscape". Have you updated to SP1?
As I am away from my friends computer ( 100 kms) it will be a while before I can try a few things. He has updated to SP1 in hopes that there will be a better driver, but he has no idea what to do next, or how to do it. When I do go to visit him, I will try first "updating" the driver letting Windows search for a better one. When you say "deleted all the printers" do you indeed mean "delete" or did you uninstall them ?

Not included quote as to much.

Hi dbknox.
Yes delleted printers in printer window NOT uninstalled.
Yes have SP1 installed.

What do you EXactly mean "no way I can change the "portrait/Landscape". "

Also if any one else is reading - LASER printers.
Installed Uni driver from HP and looking within printers covered my 5L was Not covered.
But .... oh yes, but complicated now. - new MOB no par ports (damm) so got USB to par cable (from bloody Japan or somewhere) plugged in Printer not working, well sort off but not. Keep reading the story goes on......... Connected old comp to network (found it very difficult to get Vista to see it) but still, print on XP computer shared, This is the good bit... Printed a test page from Vista over network to XP computer then to printer and HEY we have a printed page..... But drivers that were used WERE the Vista 64bit UniDRV so .....
IF you have a HP Laser printer that has either HP PCL 5 or HP PCL 6 then get the Unidriver 64bit version.

Thanks for that SteveM
The main gist of my earlier post was the fact that My friends epson 200 printer will only print a photo on the paper with the long side going side to side although the preview shows up and down. This causes part of the photo to be missing. ( Printing a 4x6 print).
When we try to change to "landscape" to see if that will make a difference the little check window is greyed out.
Hope you have help with your problem, good luck to you.
