well as the title says have a major drive problem and i think ive broke it!
firstly im VERY unaware when it comes to this kind of thing! all i use my laptop for is browsing on the net i do have spyware and antivirus thingys but dont really know much else!

ive been driving myself mad trying to find a fix for this problem for day and now im at the point i wanna smash the thing! anyway rambling on so this is it...

my dope of a partner decided to install nero! i didnt like it and it kept freezing the computer and generally didnt work so uninstalled it! after i did that the next day i went to burn a disc using wmp 11 and it kept spitting the disc back out and wouldnt read it! I cant get the driver to read blanks cds dvds nothing! i looked all over for advice (wish i hadnt) been in device manager and looked for updates says theres none! went to regedt and did the lower/up thing but think ive deleted the wrong thing as the website didnt tell me not to do the one with .bak on?? have i made it even worse?

its a compaq presario on vista home basic and the driver is - TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L632H ATA DEVICE.

Really stumped now and near tears with frustration! Please if anyone at all could help id be very gratefull and if u need any more info let me know! as i said really dont know what im doing with computers so if its possible please use a simplified version!

sorry to be such a pain in the backside!

got all excited there and got a programme (special uninstaller) from google and yep you where right it did find some wee nasty bits of nero so done that and the regedit thing and rebooted but.......nope!

got all excited thinking that was it problem solved poped in a dvd and it spat it back out and said please insert a disc!

My Computer

erm the uninstaller thing has come up with 87 other software things but some i dont have a clue what they are and if i need them so dont wanna go uninstalling them!

wow! never got so mad at something so bloody stupid! it really is driving me insane! was up till 4.30am a few days ago trying to solve it!

First do please make sure you export a copy of your registry to your desktop and hopefully to a thumb drive too.

Basically you will be going down under HKEY LOCAL MACHINE, SOFTWARE - expand that - and then you will go under SOFTWARE and delete anything with nero in it (or if nero is manufactured by someone specific you can look for that name as well - just make sure it is only nero-burner-related that you remove).

Then you will go under SYSTEM and expand Control Set 001. Expand ENUM and read through to see if you can see any nero burner info there -- could even be the serial number of the hardware/burner that is there. Delete anything nero-burner related. Repeat with Control Set 002 (and 003 if you have one) looking for anything connected with Nero.

Hopefully that'll ream it out for you.

If things go wonky, you import that handy little backup copy of the registry you exported earlier, and you are back to square one but no worse off!

thanks very much for ur help but Erm just had a look through the areas that u mention on registry and nothing in there at all with the words nero!

My Computer

please dont use any registry repai software , look in nero's forums on how to manually uninstall properly , you could end up in deed do do letting software do it for you ;)

You could try going into device manager (rt. click computer/properties and select device manager). Expand the DVD/CD Rom drives, right click on the drive and select uninstall. Then reboot the computer. On reboot it will reinstall the drive.

its starting to get to be a pain this isnt it :P if you reinstall Nero does it work? that way at least we can tell if its definately nero causing the problem , sorry if ou already tried this you know what im like for reading posts properly ;)

im wondering if its a registry issue (deleting that file you shouldnt have) that a registry repair would do the trick? or alternatively a repair install (you most likely dont have a vista disc (not that it would work anyway ;) ) but you will have a recovery partition on your hard drive you'll have to use that , look on manufacturers webby to see what to do its usually a key press on bootup F8 for example

heres how to backup your registry (for the next time you screw it up ;) ;)

ill keep looking for anything else that might help
