Problems with Atheros wireless adapter drivers

I have an HP dv5-1002nr notebook PC from 2008 (piece of junk if you ask me, but that's another issue).

Way back when I first bought this computer, the wireless adapter driver would get corrupted every time the computer would overheat. At the time, I was shown how I could reinstall the Atheros wireless adapter driver from my Recovery Manager.

I have since solved all the overheating issues, but this morning, the Atheros driver disappeared (or was corrupted) again, and I have tried reinstalling it several times, both from the Recovery Manager and from the HP driver web site.

The files will load, and the installation wizard goes through, but then even after I reboot, the driver still doesn't show up in my network device manager settings, and the network wireless adapter still won't turn on.

HELP!!!!!

Hello and welcome thefourwinds , starting to sound like maybe a hardware issue here, are you still able to connect with it wired ? I am thinking hard ware issue based on the fact that you say the driver will not load up . However, have you tried uninstalling that driver and then reloading fresh one ?

Thanks Yard Dog. Yes I can still connect with wired (as I've always been able to when I have this problem).

You are saying a hardware problem, but what hardware?

BTW, I know just enough about computers to be dangerous, so I often sound as if I know a lot more than I do.

Thanks for any help.

Although laptops are small and compressed, a driver is software that makes hardware perform as desired, that being said, there is hardware that controls the wireless connection. Try going to your Device Manager and open the Network Adapter up by pressing the plus sign , for the wireless, just go ahead and uninstall the wireless driver , then try to reinstall the new one.

But that's just the issue. When this happens, the wireless completely disappears from the Network Adapter info in the device manager. I've been reinstalling all morning, and it's not working.

That's why I was curious what hardware you thought might be the problem.

Meaning, I've been reinstalling, but it never reappears in the device manager.

Rut roh, that is not good at all, you may have to have that rascal checked out by a repair shop, unless someone else here has any ideas for you.

Ha, I downloaded Speccy, then when it was running, it said a problem occurred, and Windows shut down the program.

Wow, may be other hardware affected from the overheating issues you had . Do you ever get any beeps at startup , other than the normal start up beep ? Speccy scans your hardware installed on your computer and when done , shows what you have, give it another try at running .
