Solved Vista x64 Conexant Driver Success

Folks:

Just wanted to share my success finding a driver that worked with my Presario M2000 laptop. I shoehorned Vista 64 onto it, and, as has been widely reported, neither the ATI integrated Audio nor the fax/modem worked.

HP has released drivers which work just fine, even though they aren't labelled for the M2000 series of laptops. They are:

SP35558 (Audio) and SP35736 (Modem) -- Conexant AC97 Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows Vista (64-bit) 6.14.10.671 (10 Apr 2007), and Modem Installer for Conexant Soft Data/Fax Modem with SmartCP (Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit) , respectively.

The install program was NOT successful in installing the drivers, but in using the "update driver" dialog in the device manager, navigating to C:\swsetup and using the appropriate directory, installing the drivers by hand was succesful both times. Upon reboot, it worked fine without overriding the driver signature enforcement.

Was surprised that these worked after months of looking. But now the M2000 hums along great with everything doing what it's supposed to do.

Best of luck,

DW

I'm at work and can't send them from here. Just go to the HP Business web site and search for the SPxxxxx numbers. They'll pop right up. Or you can go to ftp.hp.com and look for them there. They are in the /pub/softpaq directory, if memory serves, and are listed by number. Poke around -- you'll find em. :)

As for whether they work or not, I don't know about your model. If you are feeling adventurous, you can compare some of the .inf file entries with the data in the properties column which relate to manufacturer, device ID and the like and see if they are close. That's how I finally figgered it out.

I tried doing this with my Compaq Presario X6000 CTO but it doesn't work. Maybe i am doing something wrong? I have the same sound card as you do, Conexant AC97. I ran the SP35558.exe from ftp.hp.com and the install failed. Then i went do device manage and tried to update driver, pointing to the SP35558 folder. I get an error that these are not the correct drivers.

I am running Vista x64. Any ideas?

Thanks,
-Dan

Morning. As I understand it, there are lots of variations of underlying hardware for the Connexant AC97 cards. So the drivers that worked for my hardware may not work for yours. I'm afraid I just don't have the experience to tell you whether or not this SHOULD work.

Best,

Dan, I just wanted to thank you for saving me a lot of time trying to make my sound work! I think it is helpful to know the steps to installing it manually. The way that worked for me is (Update Driver ---> Browse my computer for software ---> Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer ----> Picked Conexant ----> hit have disk command ----> select location where you saved the executable AFTER you installed it. (for me it was C:\SWSetup\SP35558)
Once I did this it worked. I hope others will find these steps useful.

Thanks again, :)

Eric...

Thanks for the note! Glad my struggles were able to help you find the solution.

Just as an update, I have had no further issues with either of my Vista x64 installations. Everything's working as it should, and I go for unusually long periods of time between reboots. My Vista installations are rock solid.

Nice surprise!

SFVDan for this man is a genius..I download the drives just like he said, whent to hp.com selected the drivers option, did a search using the files names listed above sp..., after download completed, double clicked on each file and install failed, however, it created the swsetup folder in the c drive. went to device manager, double clicked on modem, selected update driver option, browse my computer, let me pick from the list, selected modem from the list, then click on have disk button at the bottom, browsed to the swsetup and then to each respectevely subfolder picked the only file option given clicked open and it installed the driver and it worked. I followed the same step to install the sound card, picking sound ..blah blah controller from the list, and the sound card worked as if it was xp. no update was necessary.

by the way, I did this in windows 7, 64bit, for those who don't know is the next microsoft operating system after vista that uses the same drivers as vista.

Thanks
SFVDan couldn't had done it without ya..
