It sounds likes your scren refresh rates are out, or maybe the monitor is beginning to give out.

To get to safe mode, you need to press F8 repeatly after the Bios POST, but before Windows Vista starts to boot until you get to the Vista boot menu.

From the menu you can select various options, of which one is Safe Mode, and another would be Low Resolution Mode (I'm not sure of the exasct wording on that one, as I haven't had to use it for some time).

If you can get to Low Res Mode, then your display driver is corrupted and needs to be re-installed. If not, then try getting into Safe Mode and rolling back your driver.

If neither works, then its possible that your monitor is beginning to fail and needs to be replaced. I've just a couple of days ago had a case like this, where the PC begins to boot, Windows starts, but as soon as XP got to the login screen, it went black. Replacing the monitor resolved the issue. Using the "faulty" monitor on a different PC produced ther same result, confirming that the monitor was giving out.

Hope this info helps.

Code 31 means that one or more files associated to the driver cannot be loaded, which in this case would appear to be the INF file. The INF file tells Windows about the various binaries of the driver, what settings to use in the registry, etc.

Question: Are you loading the drivers from a file you previously downloaded from the 'net, or from the setup cd that came supplied with your motherboard? (I'm assuming we're discussing the onboard lan controller)

Maybe youve done this already, but have you tried a System Restore back to when it was working OK?? Also if you CAN get into Bios screen, how about the option that lets you go to the Last Know Best Configuration....

Coolchris has a point. Try Last Known Good Configuration.

Also, does the BSD mention any driver file in particular, and what is the code of the BSD (0x021, 0x0A, etc?). You may need to use the Disable Restart on System Failure option in the boot menu to be able to se that, as BSDs sometime don't show long enough to see anything unless you use that option.

Well to be honest mate, as it seems to be an update problem and you cannot identify which specific update caused the problem, then I would personally, backup my files and folders, bite the bullet and reformat. Drastic, but at least you have a working PC.
Might be a silly question, but have you got a Full Backup? Always a good idea.

EDIT: WAIT. Just noticed that Attansic have been taken over by Atheros. Can you post the proper details of your Ethernet card please. The spec you posted on the other page is too sketchy. Once we have that we can hunt down an uptodate Atheros driver for you. I have an Attansic Ethernet and Windows update found a driver from Atheros.

Another solution: uninstall all your updates, let windows do its updates again and the Atheros driver should pop up..it did for me.

Yes, use a longish thin screwdriver with some bluetak on the end if its hard to get at. Works for me.
