guys..ok well i jus replaced a cpu fan..to a better intel fan...and it comes up to my bios screen and i turn on the computer...then the cpu fan goes haywire and spins as fast as it can....then my computer automatically shuts down...

any clue??

i need a quick answer..cuz i got homework

I've got two theories...

Either you installed the fan wrong... maybe you didn't use some thermal paste?...

or the fan is broken.

It sounds like your CPU is overheating... then trying to save itself it speeds up the fan (I assume you have some type of cool & quiet or other type of fan speed override enabled in the BIOS)... then as a last ditch effort, the PC is instantly shut off to save the CPU from becoming nothing more than a little brick of black chared metal.

I'd remove the "new" CPU fan... and make sure it's installed correctly... and if you didn't use any... make sure you put some thermal paste... and not too much. You should only use about the size of a pea of the stuff.... it's also possible that you put way too much paste on... in that case, remove some.

If you've already considered this and you've already ensured the fan is seated correctly on the CPU... did you buy the correct heatsink/fan combo for your processor type?

Not all fans are created equal...

also.... if your PC worked fine with the other fan, why did you replace it?

Forgot to explain thermal paste....

it helps transfer the heat of the CPU into the heatsink so that the heat can be removed better.

Also... your heatsink/fan probably came with some... it's sometimes a little plastic package with some "white stuff" inside.... that would be your thermal paste.... other colors are grey or silver looking.

If you didn't use any... then I'd assume that's your current problem.

Oh... and since you were using a stock cooler before.... that came with thermal paste already on the heatsink... it was the square of "grey stuff" on the heatsink.... when you removed the older cooler.... you probably even had the grey stuff all over ontop of the CPU.

EVERY TIME you swap a heatsink fan.... you MUST clean off the CPU and place fresh thermal paste.

If you don't do it, you might get by... but you're asking for more problems in the long run.

dang it..sorry it's my first time..now i get it...i thought it was some crap melting off my cpu so i wiped it off from my cpu and heatsink..can i buy this at bestbuy or something..cuz i cant wait for newegg to ship...

err this sucks

My Computer

yea i totally put the fan on the cpu without thermal paste...so u guyus think that's still the problem with the cpu heating up without the paste..and shutting itself down??

thanks u guys are awesome

My Computer

Yes.... your PC is shutting down because it's overheating. It's a protective thing built into the BIOS I thinnk. I've had this happen to me where I forgot to plug in my CPU fan and it would over heat and instantly shut down long before making it to Windows.

Yeah, pick some up at Best Buy or Radio Shack... Walmart might even carry the stuff.

Any brand or type of thermal paste should work for you.... of course there are better pastes than others.... but considering you don't have any on your CPU right now... anything would be better than nothing. ;)

this is the stuff I use...
Newegg.com - Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound - OEM

Of course depending on who you talk to you'll get different opinions on what's "best".

...no worries about wipping off the thermal paste and not knowing what it was... we all start at the begining... but I bet you never make that mistake again. ;)

Oh... and thermal paste can conduct electricity, so be careful not to get any in places where it could cause a short of your motherboard, CPU or other parts.

If adding thermal paste doesn't help then I'd start to think it's just the wrong heatsink/fan combo for your CPU... if that's the case, put the old one back on for now (**with thermal paste**, lol) and exchange the new one for another one that's made for your CPU's heat specs.

no..noo...actually i have two comps..a pentium 4 and a quad core..the fan w/pentium 4 was a little better..so i was swapping them..there both lga 775 socket...so that's great..and pretty much both of them had the same symptoms after i wiped the paste off...

My Computer

^It wont SHUT DOWN at first but the CPU temperature will be high and if it becomes too high then the CPU will shut down to prevent damage.

BTW use the HSF that came with Quad Core, dont swap it with the Pentium 4 one (even if they are both LGA 775,the Quad One is designed to be better)

and as someone else said please be careful with the thermal paste as it conducts electricity, get some technical help if you can.
Hope it all works out for you ! :)

Hey Asky... for your O/C of the e4300... are still using the stock HSF or did you upgrade that before trying the O/C?... I have the e4300 but I haven't purchased a new HSF yet and thought that this chip still does a good O/C with stock cooler... any personal thoughts on that?

Thanks...

@ Matt... like Asky says and I was trying to say... HSF (heatsink/fans) are made with a certain processor range in mind... not just the socket.

so take socket 775... you not only need a correct HSF for the sockeet... but then you have to make sure that the HSF supports your CPU.

Here's a basic example
Socket 775
HSF1 supports CPU 1,2,3,4,5
HSF2 supports CPU 1,2,3,4,5,6,7
HSF3 supports CPU 4,5,6,7,8
HSF4 supports CPU 8,9,10,11,12,13

You might think that HSF4 would be OK with all CPUs below 8... but due to core changes CPU 2 might produce far more heat than CPUs above 8. It can be complicated to figure out.... most if not all HSF will say what socket and CPU range they support though.

As for what might happen without thermal paste... you saw first hand what can happen, lol... but the long term non-use of it, if your PC would even make it to Windows would be random crashes and eventually your CPU would die due to all the extra heat. If you want to make it even worse, you could in theory damage your motherboard as well since the CPU would be just that hot.

TK.

In theory you could do a burn in test... but I wouldn't worry about it too much... your compound will "settle" as time goes on... I think for AS-5 you should run your PC for at least 200 hours before worring to much about the temps.

When I first put my stuff on I was getting temps around 40-45... after a couple of weeks the temps came down to 30-35... so give it time before thinking the stuffs not working.

Is your PC up and running now?

man u guys are amazing....and teknomedic..thanks abunch for all your time...i was surprised my cpu temps on both comps went down by a bout 10C, and even fully loaded is cooler than my old idle temp..
thanks a lot man
