^It wont SHUT DOWN at first but the CPU temperature will be high and if it becomes too high then the CPU will shut down to prevent damage.
BTW use the HSF that came with Quad Core, dont swap it with the Pentium 4 one (even if they are both LGA 775,the Quad One is designed to be better)
and as someone else said please be careful with the thermal paste as it conducts electricity, get some technical help if you can.
Hope it all works out for you !
Hey Asky... for your O/C of the e4300... are still using the stock HSF or did you upgrade that before trying the O/C?... I have the e4300 but I haven't purchased a new HSF yet and thought that this chip still does a good O/C with stock cooler... any personal thoughts on that?
Thanks...
@ Matt... like Asky says and I was trying to say... HSF (heatsink/fans) are made with a certain processor range in mind... not just the socket.
so take socket 775... you not only need a correct HSF for the sockeet... but then you have to make sure that the HSF supports your CPU.
Here's a basic example
Socket 775
HSF1 supports CPU 1,2,3,4,5
HSF2 supports CPU 1,2,3,4,5,6,7
HSF3 supports CPU 4,5,6,7,8
HSF4 supports CPU 8,9,10,11,12,13
You might think that HSF4 would be OK with all CPUs below 8... but due to core changes CPU 2 might produce far more heat than CPUs above 8. It can be complicated to figure out.... most if not all HSF will say what socket and CPU range they support though.
As for what might happen without thermal paste... you saw first hand what can happen, lol... but the long term non-use of it, if your PC would even make it to Windows would be random crashes and eventually your CPU would die due to all the extra heat. If you want to make it even worse, you could in theory damage your motherboard as well since the CPU would be just that hot.
