Vista wont load (stuck on black screen)

I purchased a new computer a little over a week ago, and installed a new copy of Vista on a new hard drive. Ever since, I've been having nothing but problems trying to get Vista to actually work and run stable. The system will usually run great for a day or two, then I'll get all these random errors out of nowhere, taking forever to start up, being stuck on "Configuring Update" screens, countless blue screen errors, or start up errors (corrupt files, failed to shut down, etc). I've had my system restore points dissapear. When I'd run Vista disk to do a start up repair, my HD would no longer show up as it use to before. Basically, I've reformatted and reinstalled Vista 4 times. I came across a fix for the "Configuring Updates" problem, which was the first problem I came across. Now, every time I reformat Vista, I make sure to turn Automatic Updates to inform me when I need updates, but not to download/update it automatically, I'll just do it manually. However, one fix leads to another problem, and I'm really at a loss on what to do.

I just reformatted for the 4th time yesterday. A clean install, installed my motherboard and videocard drivers, downloaded and installed SP1 (I came across a couple of blue screen errors supposedly, I wasn't around when they happened, just saw a box telling me they occured). I have Automatic Update turned to inform me, but not to automatically download and install updates. I installed Avast antivirus, Ad Aware, a PC videogame, and a Microsoft Mouse software program. Everything installed and seems to run fine. Rebooted, and the computer started up fine, within a couple of minutes.

I turned it off for the night, and now the next morning (today), it took a very long time to get to the sign in screen. I typed my password in, but it didn't show up until about 2-3 minutes after. I then finally logged in, things seemed a little laggy. I tried to reboot it. The computer remained on the 'System shutting down' screen for at least 15-20 minutes until I decided to just crash the computer. I started the computer back up by booting from the Vista disk, to try to do a system repair from it. Again, what would usually take a couple of minutes, was taking abnormally long. I finally got to the system startup repair, which ran over an hour with no update. I really have no idea if its actually doing something, or just stuck. So I canceled out, which again really didn't do anything. I was forced to crash the PC, start it back up, and attempt to start up in safe mode. The BIOS screen loads, the error screen loads (Windows failed to start up etc..) in which I chose to start up in safe mode. It's now been sitting at a black screen for over 2 hours.

I'm not sure what to do, besides reformat it again. But I'm getting the idea that reformatting the computer over and over isn't solving anything. I don't know exactly what my problem is, as there just seems to be countless problems that spring out of nowhere. Any help or suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Bump. I guess I'm just going to end up reformatting again, I don't know what to do. Trying to access anything else (regular start up, safe mode start up, vista disk system repair, etc) all just seem to get stuck on a black screen or take forever, and as I said, I really have no idea if the computer is actually doing anything, or if it's just stuck. Is there a guide I should be looking for, to give me any ideas of how to run a stable Vista? If I reformat this again, everything will be fine and dandy for a day or two, then the problems will start rolling in. I don't know how to prepare for or combat this.

What are your system specs, what hardware do you have, was the computer set up to run Vista, do you have enough memory at least 2gigs, is everything pushed into the slots on the motherboard properly, do you have a good power supply and did you install all of the motherboard and hardware drivers?

Hi V64user, welcome to the board,

Your problem is very likely to be error in accessing HD due to 1. bad hard drive 2. bad SATA cable and 3. Bad SATA cable contact. Like I alway tell every one, try wiggle and push in the SATA connector to make sure there is a good contact. Believe me, loosen SATA contact is a known problem that cause freez, crash, and booting broblems. Try to see if it help, then we start from there.

Posting your system specs would be helpful in diagnostic. Keep us up to date.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Sorry, I forgot to list my computer specs. All hardware is brand new, except for the cd rom drive. I put the computer together myself.
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3L
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo e7200 2.53 ghz (not oc'd)
Videocard: evea geForce 9600gt (not oc'd)
Power Supply: Corsair VX450w
RAM: 4gigs G.Skill ram (2x2gig)

I have about a 70gb WD sata HD which is new (IE never been used), but it has been sitting around for the last couple of years. Personally, I was wondering if the HD might be the problem myself. It's being recognized by BIOS all the time though, so I figured it was good. As for the computer itself. Everything is pushed/inserted in to the best of my knowledge. After every OS install, the first thing I'll do is install the GPU drivers, as well as the MoBo drivers, so those are always taken care of. Sound card is on board, so that's taken care of with the MoBo drivers. Usually if I can make it this far with a stable computer, I'll eventually get online and download updates for said drivers.

As for the HD connection, thank you for the suggestion. I'm thinking you might be on to something, and I have a feeling it might be a HD problem as well. I've disconnected and reconnected the sata cable, and connected the other end into the second sata slot on the MoBo. I'm now going to try and reformat my HD and install Vista again (I previously tried to, however after the installation, the computer restarted, got to the Microsoft loading screen, then rebooted again and an error screen came up). I'll see how this turns out and let you all know.

One thing that strikes me as odd, although could just be normal. When I go to install Vista on my HD, I make sure to format and delete everything off the HD, and start new. As I'm doing this, the Disk 0 Unallocated Space window shows my HD as 74.5gb of Total/Free space. Below that though, it shows how I can Choose Size, with the measurement being in megabytes. The automatic size it usually chooses is 76137mb, which to me seems like it would be larger than 74.5gb..which would be 74500mb if I'm assuming this correctly?

Not sure here but I recall some issues with running newly installed Vista with 4 GB of RAM?? ( the pro's will need to chime in on this one..) but I think some issues were reported when trying to run a new installation on 4 GB...might want to try starting with 2?? Please correct me guys.. just a thought..
I think it had something to do with Vista needing the SP1 to be stable on some systems with more than 2 GB of RAM?

Whooops.. sorry.. my bad.. saw you had SP1 installed.. my apologies....:o

No, thanks for the suggestion. I never heard that before, but hey, it could be a situation who knows. I'll wait to hear from the others on this as well, and see if I can't find anything on it online.

As for SP1. I don't start out with SP1, I need to download it after I get my computer up and running. So technically I don't have SP1 at the moment.

I have managed to get Vista freshly installed again, and up an running. There were a few questionable "problems" (I had to install my videocard drivers 3 times before they actually installed). Besides that, I have my videocard and motherboard drivers installed, my PC game, and I'm about to get my Avast antivirus and Ad Aware installed.

I'd like to be prepared for when I go online though, as to what exactly I should do in regards to Vista. Should I download SP1 first? I currently have Windows Update set to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them", as it was originally set to "Install updates automatically (recommended)", was this a good move to do? This was suggested to fix the problem of Windows automatically downloading and updating which led to my computer taking 15+ minutes to shut down and start up every time. If I manually download SP1, that will take away a good chunk of the important updates that I need to download, leaving me with the rest that I can search on Microsofts site and manually download/install. Does this sound like a good idea or not?

I just want to make it clear, that despite the fact I have Vista up and running doesn't mean everything has been fixed. I strongly suspect my system to start running into problems within the next 2 days, as it usually has before. If it indeed is a problem with the Vista OS, I want to make sure I do everything correctly in regards to setting up and updating Vista to run stable.

My Computer

The proper order of installation is this: 1) Install Vista. 2) Install SP1. 3) Install Chipset Drivers. 4) Defrag. 5) Install Graphics Drivers. 6) Install Sound Drivers. 7) Install other software.

You should also make sure to unplug your ethernet while installing Vista so it doesn't silently update in between the time you install Vista and SP1. I'm not sure if your problems are installation related or hardware related because of the way you've installed some apps before completing the OS install?

While the drive hasn't been used, that doesn't necessarily mean it's, "new". That's splitting a mighty fine hair, I know, but until you sort this out, let's not assume it's new.

I know you don't want to hear this, but I would start from scratch. Double check all your connections. Use a new SATA cable if you can. Check to see if the drive is SATA 1.5 or 3.0. Go into the bios and make sure that the board isn't set accordingly. Boot up, delete the partition, create a new one, format, install Vista; this time in the correct order. If this fails and you're still having the same problems, then we've got to look at your hardware, because it's not the OS.

To get to this point, I believe you had your 2 gig of ram removed. Buy this time you probably had every good and done. Just in case you hadn't, as soon as you are connected on line, click on window update, and vista will automatically update about 60 plus items and install. After that, there may be few more and the SP1. After finish install and restart, there may be a few more item to download and install. After everything is up to date, turn off system and put the 2 gig of ram back. Then you are done and enjoy!!!

Note: If you have bad HD or connection, the first batch of window updates will not install completely with a bunch of errors and then SP1 wouldn't show up in auto update.

It's better to first install SP1, then update, not the other way around.

Hello V64User.

You can get SP1 for 64-bit Vista here and load it to disc so you have it to install without connecting to the web.

Keep us informed!

I don't have the greatest confidence in Windows Update. I see no reason to install Vista and then let it update a bunch of patches that SP1 is going to render superfluous, so why bother? In order to get around Vista's silent updating, just unplug your ethernet when installing Vista. Have SP1 on a disc or flash drive and after Vista installs, install SP1.

At this point, if you so desire, you can update Vista; however, a Vista SP1 rig on its own runs sweet. I don't know what each subsequent patch is going to do to each machine (i'm not very trusting of patches when things work perfectly well), but it's a good base to start figuring out the problem.

... or, lol, as BareFoot pointed out, slipstream SP1... but of course, you'd need a working machine to create the disc. If you don't have one, then unplugging will work too.

Thanks again for all the help guys, this means alot. I'm not even going to bother to see how well Vista runs tomorrow when I wake up. I'll download SP1 and burn it onto a disk, and then go step by step on the installation (huge kudos for that by the way Fumz). Of course I'll keep this thread updated, whether it's running great or bit the dust, we shall see.

V64User, glad you got it working and appologize for high jacking your thread.

Hi all, I took your words for downloading SP1 for future installation. The downloaded SP1 file is 726.5 MB which wouldn't fit into a 702 MB CD-R and I'm unable to save it onto a DVD-R. When I try to save, it says either the disk is full or it is now a writable CD. Please advice me how to burn it onto a disk. Thanks lot.

First I would notice that you have a total of 820GB of hard drive space; surely you can fit the lesser of the two SP1 packs (mine is 800 something MB)? If space is sparce (ohh, i just made a rhyme) then burn it to a dvd, or better yet, create an SP1 slipstream DVD. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/151606-vista-sp1-slipstream-installation-dvd.html

Why exactly are you unable to burn it?

Alright, I've installed 1. Installed Vista, 2. Installed SP1 from my flash drive. I'm about to install my mobo drivers and defrag.

A question I have. After I get that done, and my videocard drivers+software installed, when I go online, should I leave Windows Update to Automatic? Or should I set it to tell me when there are updates, but allow me to manually download them when I want?
