Is the Western Digital an IDE or SATA drive? If it is SATA, is the SATA controller in your BIOS set to IDE or RAID mode? Try setting it to IDE mode and try again.

If it isan IDE drive, try setting the IDE controller to use automatic detection of appropriate settings for DMA, etc.

If you still have a problem, what happens if you plug the drive into adifferent machine and format from there?

Error Code 0x80070057 is usually associated with Windows Update, usually drivers. Disconnect any new devices. Try turning of Automatic Updates during install.

If that doesn't work you may need to get the Raptor checked to see if it is faulty. When you do your new install you can do this by by running the check disk utility

check-disk1.PNG
or if you have a 32 bit System you can use the Western Digital Utility here

Hi lambofgod1234, welcome to the board.

Well, go ahead and format it. Make sure it is not dynamic but basic so you can format it. Remember to make it bootable. When you plug it back into the original unit, try another SATA port and replace the SATA cable with an after market one is possible. Post back the result of the installation.

Good luck and happy holiday.

I am having the same issue when installing Vista Ultimate x64 on my 1.5TB Seagate Barracuta HDD. Could someone give me an idea of what i can do... Is there anything else that can be done besides hooking it up to another computer? That seems like a last resort type scenario.

Thx

Need a bit more detail on your rig and just what you are trying to do. i.e. Is this a fresh install, a new HDD etc

Hi KiKGuy66, welcome to the board.
Since your unit is having the same problem as this thread starter, have you tried all the suggestions? How is it turn out?

It would be to your benefit if you can start a new thread and provide us with detail of the problem so every one here will be noticed and pitch in with ideas.

Cheers,

Bruce

Did you install the proper drivers for the controller?

I too had this issue. First of all, I'd recommend never buying a Seagate drive ever again, but since you and I already have one...

I could not format nor install Vista 64 bit on this drive natively out of the box so to speak. Vista simply wouldn't allow me to do it.

Cheesey as this may be, I got around it by first partitioning and formating the large drive using Windows XP setup. It then installed some XP files, but during the reboot phase of the XP setup, I swapped disks to the Vista install. I then proceeded to install Vista on the previously formatted XP partition.

So to summarize:

Run XP setup to create partition (did a 450 GB one)
Format that partition using XP setup
Allow initial XP install files to write
Remove XP install disk during first reboot of setup
Insert Vista install disk and boot up
Select the previously created XP partition for Vista install
Enjoy

Hey Everyone!
I had a similar issue. While I think I have worked around the problem, I wanted to get some feedback about what happened, and if I need further action.

The drive is a Western Digital WD1001FALS 1TB Sata Drive. 2 partitions of 500GB each.

I started up Vista Ultimate x32, and after logging in, the system seemed to crash. On reboot, it appeared as if the Master Boot Record had been deleted. The main partition on the drive did not exist anymore.

I removed the drive from the computer, and put it into an External Net Drive, and the second partition was there, and in perfect working order, the main partition where Vista was installed was in Raw format. Unallocated Space.

I used a file recovery utility to recover my files, and attempted to repartition and format the lost partition. This is when I got the error mentioned in this thread. I tried breaking the unallocated space into 2 partitions, and it still wouldn't format the first 250GB partition. It DID successfully format the second 250 of the original partition.

I deleted the 2 partitions again, and I created a 1001MB partition, and was able to format it NTFS. I then created my new partition after that, and it also was able to partition successfully. I then deleted the 1001MB partition, and plan to just leave it as unallocated space.

I'm about to start reinstalling Windows Vista Ultimate x32 on the newly formatted partition, but I don't feel safe putting any files on this partition anymore.

Any advise for me?
Brian Hightower

My Computer

This is an easy one to solve, and is not related to hard drive brand. I to had this issue with Windows Vista, and its not a Vista issue. It is related to the fact that Windows Setup and Format cannot format drives bigger then 1Terabyte. The fix is to download the Seagate tools from Hard Drives | Seagate and prep the drive as NTFS and once that is done you can format the drive. This also happens from within XP, Vista, and 7. This will solve all your issues.

I have a brand new system hasn't been installed with anything I first tried windows 7 install and it told me I need the device driver for the cd/DVD drive then I tried vista x64 business and it told me it couldn't format the partition and I don't have another system to plug it into what can I do??
