Hi Everyone

This is my first post and it's about a problem I'm having with a slow booting Vista Ultimate machine with plenty of gusto.

I've tried all the common fixes posted around the net. I get a two minute boot in safe mode and in reg mode with nothing in the startup. I feel that after looking at the bootlog file that it has something to do with drivers that don't load during the boot. According to the log I have dozens and dozens of drivers that apparently don't load. Here is a sample of the log. I don't enclose the whole log because it is very large. I will if necessary:

Hi ootsa,

Go to Device Manager and see if everything is installed

Ok looks like the attached picture

I think that you might have to install/reinstall some of the drivers

I'm going to agree with mattinahat here, and suggest that a reinstallation of the OS would be your best option. The reason for this is that the following item is failing to load: Did not load driver @hal.inf,%acpiapic.devicedesc%;ACPI x86-based PC. This is one of the key drivers on your system (HAL stands for Hardware Abstraction Layer) - see here for more details: Hardware abstraction layer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thanks for the replies . I had the modem disabled so enabled it with no difference in boot.

As to the hal driver. In order to get both processors showing up in the msconfig/boot/advanced I had to tick the "detect hal" reboot untick it, reboot and then tick it again in order for the 2nd processor to show up. This was a widely listed problem with the steps I showed as the solution. It did work as far as getting the 2nd processor to show but I don't know if it screwed up the driver.

Disable the ISATAP adapter in your device manager. If you don't need IPv6, disable it on your network adapters.

I would recommend upgrading all the drivers for your hardware. Go to each manufacturer website and get the latest drivers.

I did have IP v6 installed and disabled it. I dont see ISATAP listed in device manager.

Boot still the same. I'll start working on driver updating as per your suggestions.

I should mention that my slow boot problem originated after I worked with MS to get Windows Defender working. We did get it working after using the command sfc /scannow which found and suposedly fixed corrupt files.

After that , I had Defender working and as a bonus a slow boot.

Check in the network adapter area of device manager. Uninstall Windows Defender and see if it.

Windows defender cannot be uninstalled in Vista, It can only be disabled. I've done that with no change.

In the adapter section of device manager I only have my W/L and my ethernet adapters.

Try this.

Open the event viewer in administrator.
Clear everything from it.
Reboot into administrator
See what errors are in the event viewer from boot up.

I've checked a bunch of boots with the event viewer and the log shows no significant errors. The ones that show up are sporatic and show delays usually of less than a second.

It seems from the event performance viewer that the boot performance is all ok.

I boot with NO services and NO startup items and it still takes 80 seconds to boot never mind shutdown.

Ive defragged the drive and the registry. Ran cc cleaner. Its really starting to p.... me off.

Well, I think I've solved it .....Sort of. Thanks again for the replies. Here is what finally worked to get a reboot down to about 72 seconds and a windows boot to about 48 seconds.

I did two things.

1. On the net, a suggestion was made to change the page file size to 3 times my ram.

2. I changed the system to allot performance to background services instead of programs.

The downside is that after the quicker boot to desktop, it takes longer for programs to load until all the background services finish loading.

I'm going to let prefetch run for a few days and go back to adjust performance for programs and see how long it takes to boot. I may keep it at performance for programs irregardless of boot because I figured it out.

I sort of won. LOL

I changed the performance back to programs and still get the same boot so it was the page size file. I have two gigs of ram and never used it all so I don't know why it made a difference but it did.

I would disable functions. Disable prefetch and indexing. I installed Vista x64 Ultimate on 16GB. I would recommend 4GB.

I have disabled indexing but like the prefetch. I wish I could have 4G of ram but a 32 bit sysytem will only support 3 G. I have two 1 G ram sticks in my laptop for Vista Ultimate 32. I should get a 2 G stick and probably will when I can afford it.
