DiscCleanup will not run

Hello!

I'm having trouble with the DiscCleanup in Windows Vista.
When I try to open cleanmgr.exe for C: it opens for a second but closes fast when it comes to "Setup Log Files"
Cleanmgr.exe worked fine for C: before a security update from windows update was installed.
Is there a way to fix this?

Have you tried to run it just from Explorer/Computer and right clicking on your drive ? ?
How long are you waiting as the first time it is ran it takes awhile.

Hi!

Yes, that is normally the way I run the Cleanup tool. I have tried all possible way to run cleanmgr.exe. If I understood the second line correctly, I dont have to wait for it start, it just closes right away. It's almost impossible to see what is causing the application to quit so fast, but if I push the DiscCleanup button many times i see it closes when it comes to Setup Log Files

Hello Skugge, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might try a System Restore using a restore point you believe is dated before this problem to see if it can fix it.

I have just done a clean installation of Vista 32 bit sp1 today, the Cleanup tool worked just fine for C:, after I did a windows update the problem occured.
Is there a registry fix or some log files that has to be deleted, as I can see cleanmgr doesn't like the "Setup Log Files"

Download CCleaner, its just as good if not better than the MS disk cleaner, and its free.

Since you do not have a restore point to use and do not know which update it may have been, then you might see if running a sfc /scannow command can find and fix and bad or missing system files that may be causing this as well.

If this does not help, then you can do a repair (upgrade) install.

I'm sorry to say, that didn't fix the problem.
I would hoped a registry change or deletion of a log file could have solve this.

It's ok, but thanx for trying to solve this problem. :)
I have done a clean vista sp1 install and after the 22 security updates from Windows Update, I know one of them is causeing this problem. I know that because right after one of the monthly updates from MS I tried to Clean up and it didn't work. Now as the fresh Windows Updates shows the same date, it's not easy to point out witch one them it is. I hoped MS made an fix for this as time went by, but none came, and now it seems like it's not coming.
