Solved Help i lost vista!

Ugh this really sucks guys and girls.
I installed windows 7 beta and was so thrilled. But i do miss vista and wanted to do a dual boot. Little did i realize that when i upgraded, i also changed over the whole OS. Now i have nothing i can do! Im soooo damn stupid!!!!
I have no CD and dell refuses to send me one.
My PC recovery tool doesnt work since i updated the os.
And i dont have a DVD that i can burn the info to tongiht and cant get to a store to get one for a week or so(parents are out of town and im 16)
Can anyone help me get Vista back?
I have a legally bought (from dell with my computer) key code for windows home premium. I am familiar with torrent downloads and was thinking i could download the install info but i dont know how to run it.
Am i screwed?

Hello Ben,

Unless you deleted the Dell recovery partition, you should be able to use it to restore Vista with.

It wont work because vista must have been overwritten. I am screwed hu?

Yep, you deleted the recovery partition and overwrote it. Did you not create a drive image?

As for the DVD, they are a dime a dozen, do you not have a friend, neighbor you can get a dvd disk from? or for that matter borrow a Ultimate/Premium Vista disk from? You can create your own free recovery disk once you install Vista using a borrowed disk, and your key: http://www.paragon-software.com/home/db-express/

I have a dell inspirion 530. They are very very picky with the type of DVD i use. I have tried maxwell and a few others and it wont even read them!

the dvd optical drive is not a dell component- If it wont read the dvd you either have a bad optical drive or bad dvd disk. Try a DVD-R or DVD-RW

Sorry guy; it looks like the recovery partition is gone. It seems as though I remember you asking a while back about deleting that partition; did you delete the information on that partition to use it for backups?


I think people tried to talk you out of it.

I have 25 DVD-R and they wont work.
I dont get what your saying sorry but i am really bad with hardware for computers.

That was for my buddy. He had a problem but i did fix it up. I am gunna try something. If it works ill let you all know. If it doesn't, then im screwed and stuck with something that i really dont want to use full time right now.

Are you trying to erase/write to these dvd's that you have already used? they are not re-writables, the data cannot be removed once written, or the disk reused. A new dvd-r has to be formated, before it can be used.

Hi Neverhavemoney,

When you installed the o/s, presumably you installed it to the partition (C) and did not format the second partition (D).

If you did not format D , could you Post a screenshot of what files/folders are on it ?

I assume D did not originally have a drive letter assigned.

No the DVD's are fresh and the computer wont even register them that they are in. When i insert one, i can hear it start to spin and within 10 seconds it stops and nothing happens. I will probably get some new ones soon and try them,
And SIW2 I did an upgrade, so i guess i did not touch D. I attached a screen shot of the files.
What can i do with these files?

Double click the Dell folder to open it and post a screenshot of what's inside.

Do the same with the Recovery bin folder.

I am at school but RIGHT when i get home i will.
Please be on here around 245 if you can i will be on then and i need to get this sorted out tonight. I have my mid terms coming up and i need my computer for them.
I know there is an Image folder which contains a 3 GB file in it called Factory.WMI or WIM
I tried to copy this to the C:/ Drive but nothing happened when i tried to do my PC restore. It still is trying to do it for windows 7.

Any ideas?

Hi Ben,

You have the factory image on that partition.

This is what would normally be restored if you ran the recovery program.

We are looking for a way of running the restore program from there.

It's too much to hope that there is a restore.exe or similar on that partition - have a look and see if you can find something like that in one of the folders.

Otherwise trying to find a way of burning it as a bootable dvd - which would be the same as a "recovery" disc.

Might be a way of getting vlite to do it.
