Hi,

The best thing is to borrow aM$ installation dvd - do you know anyone who has one ?

Any will do - they all include all Editions of Vista - it is the product key that determines which edition is actually installed from the dvd onto the HD.

If that's not possible, still thinking of a way to make a dvd from what you have.

I downloaded the CD from a bittorrent last night. Im gunna try and burn it to a DVD+RW that i got from a store today. I hope that will work.
I have never done a fresh install before so can someone run me through how this is going to work and what i should do for every step?

Hi Ben ,

Hope it works for you.

When you burn the .iso to dvd - do not format the dvd - if autoplay window pops up, just close it.

You also need to d/l the drivers for your machine and copy to a cd beforehand - Dwarf gave the link , but here it is again

If you're really stuck...I have a dell 530 in the studio...I scrubbed the original O/S to upgrade to a 64bit system...You are more than welcome to have the restore DVD that came with the system.

I'm in the UK ( so it may take a week for so ) but I can post it to you on Monday - if it's not too urgent....In the mean time you can just enjoy the windows 7.

EDIT: hoping you can use a UK recovery disk on a US system.

There is an easier way-
Do you have an external thumbdrive/usb harddrive big enough to copy the Vista O/S ISO image to?, If so copy it over, then copy this ISO burner to the drive (best that I used so far for burning ISO, and doesnt require installation to run. (like CPU-Z) see attached file.
Take your Drive to the school/public library and burn the iso image to a dvd. Then contact Dell and replace your DVD-RW optical drive under warranty.

For future reference, If your gonna upgrade your O/S, keep in mind that its not covered under warranty, and if you corrupt your restore image/partition and do not have a copy of the external media either buy a OEM system Builder O/S version, or merely state you are trying to reinstal Vista and your partition is corrupted- and Dell will send you the DVD O/S recovery software. Do not tell them you upgraded the O/S as they will shut you down, and decline to support. Leaving you SOL.


Ps- I hope you are running excellent antivirus. MySpace is nortorious for malware.

And my support with dell is up. I didnt rebuy the coverage. I guess i should have. O well lessons are learned from bad mistakes. Ill remember this one for a long time!

The offer is still there for the Dell restore disk.

On the whole the install with have most of the drivers you need.

You probably need to update the drivers for your videocard via their website and and other bit's and pieces you have connected ( printers, scanners etc ) again you can find them via their website.

Enter your model # and download your Dell drivers here, copy them to usb/cd:

You have SATA hard drives . You will need your SATA/RAID controller driver to reinstall Vista from Disk (Copy driver either to a floppy or usb thumbdrive- It is also possible to slipstream the driver onto the Vista disk, but I think this may be too advanced.)

No. The O/S is an iso image (disk image) it has to be burned to a disk. Use the iso burner I attached above to post.

Ben,

If you still have the intact D:\ backup drive, then shut down your computer, and boot into it. I recall from reading something that this is the way to run the program to restore factory default. Its worth a shot. Hope it helps.

Hi Rive,

Now The screenshot has been posted - doesn't look like an iso to me. You may need to turn those files into a bootable .iso before transferring it to usb along with the iso burner , like Rive said.

You can do it easily with vLite.
