Solved System won't shutdown completely

My system is a recent build, and it was running flawlessly, but it just developed this problem 2 days ago. The system won’t shut down completely. It goes through the shutdown sequence to the point where the monitor and HD turn off – and that’s it – the fans keep running (Including the video card fan) and the power LED is lit. The only way I can shutdown is to hold the power switch for about 4 sec. I googled this problem and got several hits, including this forum, but I can’t find a solution. Several posts remarked that it sounds like a driver issue, so I uninstalled the software and drivers for my Dell printer and my Epson printer, which were the only drivers I’ve installed in the last week. They are Vista ready drivers and the problem didn’t start until a couple of days after I installed them. I’ve checked the power settings and advanced power settings and they are correct.
I don’t know if it an OS problem, a driver problem or a hardware problem. Anybody have a clue?

Hello Whoppapapa, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Since it worked a few days a go, you might see if doing a System Restore using a restore pointed dated then may help.

If not, then you can remove any device connected to your computer until it does work. Afterwards, add items one by one to see what device may be the cause.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi, I am experiencing the same problem. I have not found the cause yet, but i suspect that it may be a windows update. I am running a new system and after the first install it worked fine shutingdown properly, I installed a couple of things such as videocard drivers, chipset drivers etc, and it was still working fine. I had the problem before so I was monitoring this things and shuting down after each driver. app etc
It was not after I started installing updates that this problem happened, unfortunately i was installing most of them at the same time and have been unable to identify which one might be the culprit. I am uninstalling 1 by 1 but so far with no luck, i suppose the register may have been modified permanently and the only solution would be yet another clean install carefully applying 1 update at the time, will see... any help from anybody having already found a solution to the problem or any ideas will be appreciated.

Brink - I did a system restore as you suggested, but no joy. I disconnected all the peripherals and uninstalled the drivers, but still no joy.
I think you may be right, Rider70. I also downloaded and installed a bunch of updates around the time this problem started. I don't want to do another clean install if I don't have to.

Hi

I have done a "new" clean install yesterday, so far everything is working and it shutdowns correctly, but I have not installed any updates yet. Just drivers (all the latests and certified) and some software.

Is going to take me a few days (lots of work at the moment) but I will install the upadtes one by one. Will report back if I find the culprit.

by the way, I am running:

Asus P6T deluxe OC edition
Intel I7 920
6GB Corsair dominator 1600
Asus EN9600GT silent

I have not instaled everything that comes with the motherboard like AsusProbe etc this time, just drivers.

Bios updated to last verions 1303 (off course, as it happened to so many, express gate stopped working after flashing the Bios)

Thanks for the update Rider70. I uninstalled the updates that occurred during the period when the shutdown problem started. That didn't fix my problem, but as you noted the registry may have been permanently altered. I will be interested to hear what you discover.

I dont think it was an update but rather a power config issue.

Plenty of errors dating back to the beginning of the month when the system was being built. Most make no sense and the one's that point to specific files have been resolved. Device drivers are squeky clean and there are no device faults anywhere.

Well the good news is the PC Fairy must have come last night and solved my software problem. The bad news is I can't share the solution because I don't know why.

The only thing I did was download a "Marvell Yukon 88E8056 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller" driver directly from Marvell (rather than DriverDetective) and a trial version of Adobe Photoshop CS4. Somewhere in the process the problem resolved itself.

Thanks for all who helped.
