Hey all, first time poster here.

Recently, my laptop (Sony VGN-NR120E) has been freezing up with the sound looping. Usually, I would just power it down and turn it on again. It would tell me that windows shut down unexpectedly and it would give me 4 options (I would choose start windows normally and everything was fine).

Just last night, it froze up again. This time though, a blue screen appeared , with
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer.

process1_initialization_failed

I tried starting windows normally and the loading bar with the microsoft logo below appeared but then the blue screen popped up again. So, I tried safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt and last known good configuration (I think i had the last known good configuration show up by pressing F8). None of them worked, with each of them loading files then blue screening at the end.

Right now, I'm using the vista repair disk because I cannot boot into Vista. However, when i click on repair your computer, the system recovery options window does not have my operating system listed. It says something like, "if you do not see your operating system listed, click Load Drivers to load drivers for your hard disk. So i click Load Driver and things get weird. I have very little knowledge of computers so I don't which file to click. I've gone through the folders, expecting to see some indication of the operating system but I don't see one.

If anyone has a solution for this problem, or the solution to the overall problem (the blue screen), please tell me, your help would be greatly appreciated.

Update:

Well things have just took a turn for the worse. Now, when I power on my laptop, it hangs on the logo screen (in this case, VAIO) for about 6-7 minutes. It does not prompt me to press any key to go to my repair disc. After the 6-7 minutes, it goes to the microsoft loading bar (the little green sliding one) where its been "loading" for the past 25 minutes.

Help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Update:

Turns out it was just an abnormally long wait, but eventually I did get to the Vista curtains. I have tried the startup repair but it said some things could not be repaired automatically. Also, in the system recovery options window, my operating system was not listed so I could not do a system restore either. I have just finished using the chkdsk command in command prompt. The computer is now trying to boot to the repair disc menu again.

Does anyone know why the operating system is not listed in the system recovery options box? If so, could you tell me please? Greatly appreciated.

Well, at long last the problem has been solved, though for how long I'm not sure. I decided to try the repair disc again and this time things went well. Startup repair to system restore and now I'm writing to you all from the previously dead laptop.

I'm not sure exactly what caused the problem. Does anyone know if windows updates can cause this? If so, which ones?
Thanks!

Hey amx107

I had a similar problem ones with my HP laptop. It crashed with blu screen of death over and over until it would no longer startup at all. I then proceded to install XP again and every thing was fine for awile then it started again. I did this a couple of times until I found the problem.

My RAM was fried... How old is your VAIO? My HP was pretty old.

Hey Dane,

My VAIO is a little over a year old. Curious thing just happened, I'm back to the blue screen. This time the error reads

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

I've tried safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last known good config and start windows normally but, they all lead back to that screen. Also, strangely when I check my bios, it says Hard Disk Drive : None. That's weird because I was just using it a few minutes ago.

I suspect because of that, many of the system recovery options won't work either due to it not knowing the path. I remember it saying Unknown Path (C:) or something like that. I've tried using the chkdsk/r and bootrec/fixboot command but that didn't work either. Said something along the lines of the system path was not found and its write only.

So to recap:
I've gone from one BSOD to another. If anyone has the solution, PLEASE PLEASE post it! Many thanks!

Also, may I ask what the problem was for you Dane?

Nevermind, I just saw the fried RAM. Hope all goes well for you.

Hey again

My BSOD changed allmost every time it crashed... I simply replaced the RAM and every was fine.

If you got windows to work, and then after awhile it crashes again. Then in my opinion it must be a hardware problem. Especially if the BSOD changes with each crash.

Dane,

I think it is a hardware problem but I'm not sure if it's the RAM. You see, I stopped getting blue screens altogether.

Instead I get "Operating system not found". If I boot from the CD's, it hangs at the logo screen for awhile then doesn't recognize the operating system in the system recovery options. I suspect this could be hard drive failure though this is only a guess.

Can anyone relate to this problem? If so please describe what you did to fix the problem, thanks!

Hi

Try downloading a "live" OS cd and boot from that... Ubuntu LIVE is quite good and free! If the computer runs fine off a LIVE cd, then it is the harddisk.

If that do not work, you can download a RAM scaner that you can burn to a cd and boot from. This way you can tjek if one or more of your RAM blocks are fried. I can't remember what I used, but do a google search :D
