Another Unusual Unexpected Shutdown Problem in Vista

Hi folks; I'm new-ish to the forum so I hope I have posted this in the right category.

Unfortunately, this is another unexpect shutdown problem. The system is a Gigabyte MB (MA770-DS3), AMD 64 6000+, Radeon (Sapphire) HD 4670 (512mb), 2x2gb XMS2 800mhz mem, 3 SATA HDDs and 1 SATA DVD/CD rw. The PSU is rated at 550W.

The unusual thing about these shutdowns is that they happen when there seems to be no load on it. For example, running a high-end(ish) game like GTAIV is absolutely no trouble. Run Microsoft's Minesweeper, I can guarantee that within about 1 minute, the system will shutdown. Furthermore, I don't get a BSOD, just an event in the event viewer. Automatic restart has been disabled along with the enabling of a memory dump in the "startup and recovery" options. I'm have tried (in the past) clean installs along with the latest updates and drivers available (trough windows update, gigabyte's and AMD/ATI's websites). Something makes me suspect the video card, but not 100% sure. I have used my old video card (Radeon X1950 pro) and it's drivers and the problem with minesweeper did not occur. However, as i mentioned before, games like GTAIV seem to work fine with the Radeon 4670.

Temperatures from speedfan also seem to be fine. Anyone have any ideas as to how to diagnose this problem?

Chris

Since it doesn't happen with your vid card, but does happen with the customer's vid card - then it's most likely that the customer's vid card is the problem.

Updating to the latest ATI drivers will help to rule out driver issues.
Try pointing a fan at the vid card to see if that helps (had this issue w/an nVidia card).

I've got an update and some other info to add.
The power plans have been reset, but the shutdown still occurs. I'm running the latest ATI catalyst drivers (9.7) and again, no difference.

I've also just put the graphics card through its paces with another blast of GTAIV with CPUID Hardware Monitor running in the background. The GPU idles at about 42C (107F) and got up to 82C(179F) during gameplay. There was no crash during this time. I have a number of fans on the system (x3 chassis - 2 rear exhaust, 1 side intake; x1 northbridge; x1 "extra" fan along with the standard CPU stock heatsink fan). Is there any other information i can provide that might help to get to the bottom of this?

Could be mobo issues also - with the newer card stressing the mobo more than the older one. (BTW - I'm just guessing here).

In my attempt to be thorough, I've probably missed some info ;o)

The whole system is a new build; a better CPU needed a new MB, which needed a different memory. Took advantage of the pcie2, so got the new video card too ;o). Unfortunately, i now no longer have access to any of the old bits.

Here's another possible hint which may reveal something to someone more computer literate than me. I remember when i did a clean install and had none of the drivers installed (esp the vid driver), that these crashes did not occur. I did however, not stick with a driverless system for too long to completely confirm this. The more i think about things, the more i get lost as to what the problem is. :o(

Try rolling back the video driver and doing a restart.

with the making of changes threw graphic cards ect if 1 card being Nvida and the other ATI then be sure you remove ether the Nvidia or ATI driver and software as both can cause a conflict which will result in several typed of crashes and or shutdowns

In response to the last two posts:

I've tried many older driver versions which have resulted in no difference.
The previous card was also an ati card, but besides, even with a clean install of windows, the error still occurs.

If it was a driver issue, would that result in a BSOD (of which i'm not getting)? If that were the case, then we could perhaps rule out driver problems, which might help to pinpoint what's causing the problem. I suspect that that assumption may be wrong tho. I think it's the lack of these possibly helpful BSODs which is baffling me.

Is there possibly something that the MS game minesweeper requires from my system that a high end game doesn't? Just a thought...
