we are going to have to do some digging.

Can you look in event viewer (type event viewer in search) and go to windows log, applications tab. Look for errors (red "X" in the left hand column) that relate to shutdown. if there are any could you use the snipping tool (built in type snipping in search) to take a snap shot of the error and upload it to us.

thanks

Ken

Hi Ken

Sorry for the delay in replying to your post, due to working away.

I have looked through the even log but could not find any "Red X" as you requested

I did however get a few "Warning Triangle's & Error exclamation marks"

But I could not find anything at shut down time ?? only this was showing at time of shut down:-

""
The description for Event ID 0 from source gusvc cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event:
Service stopped ""

That was the last entry time before the date change.

Alan

that stop error is an invalid software interrupt. IM researching the parameters

the first parameter is a HD controller error.

I've seen a reference when Dell suggested the recovery process. Ugh. Before we go to this extreme...

How long have you seen this error? Always, or just recently? Did it occur with any installation or updates? Can you roll back to a date prior to when this error first showed up?

Right - I didn't mean to infer your computer was a Dell.
Did you see any errors in your event viewer (per Ken)?
Any errors in the Device Manager?

The only errors were there was what I listed above.

I looked at the messages but could not match any to the error message I get when
I shut down my computer.

Could these files be viewed remotely ?

If we can find out what it is we can cure it. there is one place you can look. its called event viewer.

to get there go to start>search>type event viewer. then go to the windows logs, apllications tab. look for errors (they heave a red "!" in the left hand column) that relate to or mention shutdown. see what the most comman error is. y ou can actually trigger the problem by doing s shutdown (note the time) then reboot and go into event viewer and look for errors around that time

If nothing there looks promising go to the windows log, ans system tab and look there

hope this helps

Hi Ken

I carried out what you requested and I got one error, Listed below:-

Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

It does not match the error number I get when I shut down but it is the only error at the time I shut down my computer, the other messages I get are just "Information"

Hope it helps

Alan

there is some info to suggest that there is a problem in shutting down between certain AV's an vista that gives that error. NOT conclusive yet

WMI instrumentation errors are fairly common. Have you ever uninstalled an earlier antivirus app?
