Hi, I'm brand new here. i signed up in hopes that someone could solve this issue for me. I'm not sure if I am posting in the right thread. sorry if i didn't. but i have a very annoying problem with my new vista computer. just a few days ago for no apparent reason. Notepad began opening up with some strange code. ( going up to about 40 times a day now ) and now this once annoying issue is becoming serious. because now random programs are assigning themselves to notepad. and whenever i click practicly any icon, it opens up in notepad form. i can no longer play any games, and pretty much the only thing that works is folders and Mozilla Firefox. I have done a complete system scan with Norton Anti-virus and it came up with nothing. is anyone aware of this problem? please hurry, because i fear that the internet may start doing this. Thanks

You probably have associated files with notepad. Do you have a current working anti virus scanner running?

yes. i have the freshest version of Norton anti-virus. i ran a full system scan earlier in the week, and it didn't find anything. but now i am no longer able to access it because it opens up in notepad.

if you right click an app what does it say it opens with? A file that opens in notepad is a good one to check

and i tried to do a advanced search to find the extension, but the computer couldn't locate it. and i don't know how to find it through notepad. because it is not displayed anywhere

lets try somethiing different

first do you have a backup to restore from?

can you goto start>search>type cmd>right click and run as admin>type
sfc /scannow this is a sytem file check that will verify and repair system files. this probably will not help but it cant hurt.

before you try anything I would suggest you do a backup. If the data is imortant make sure you have a copy for later

when this is done go into start>search>msconfig cahnge to a diagnostic boot and reboot.

does it still happen?
