I'm guessing it might be partitioned on your hard drive, mind getting me a picture of your partitions, if you don't know how to find them, click start-then right click computer-click "manage", then computer management will come up-on the list click disk management, and then take a picture of that for me, if you don't know how to take the picture, then go to start-type in "snipping tool"-click that-then click the arrow next to new-select window snip, then take a picture of the partitions you have on disk management.
Any questions on this just let me know,

Looking from what you gave me it seems that I'm right that it is partitioned, as the D drive, so looks like you'll need to get rid of it, also I noticed you have some extra space as well, so when I'm done showing you how to delete it and then joining it to your main partition, which is vista-C Drive, you should have more space in vista to store more files:).
Okay so first we need to delete those partitions, so on the picture you gave me of your partitions right click on the (D) one with 72.58 GB, then select delete volume, and will then delete, and hopefully look like the one next to it, the 9MB unallocated one. Then go to your (C) one with 149.05 GB of space and right click on it, and then select extend volume, when it comes up click next, then click on disk zero on the right hand side, and then in select the amount of space in MB, raise it to max, then click next, and then finish, if you still see the 9MB though do the same thing I just said, and after you're done, wala, xp is gone, and vista has more space to put more files in, if you're not completely sure on what you're doing when reading my directions, this tutorial might help you a little better if I don't explain it well enough: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/95418-disk-management-delete-extend.html

Hope everything goes well,

Hi

looking at your Screen shot, is XP installed to Disk 0 & Vista installed to Disk 1.

If so, is your Vista Boot Loader on Disk 0?

My Computer

That is correct theog.

Go to folder options and make sure Hidden files and protected o/s files are showing.

Look on C drive for bootmgr and a pale yellow Boot folder.

If they are not there - copy and paste them from D onto C.

bootmgr&bootfolder.JPG

You will get a message bcd is in use and can't be copied - skip it and copy the rest.

Open an elevated command prompt and type:

bcdedit /export C:\Boot\bcd

then press enter.

close cmd prompt.

Download and install Paragon Partition Manager Free Edition

Select Full Scale Launcher.

Rt click C and Mark Active. Apply.

Then rt click D and Mark as Inactive. ( It will warn you - ok the warning), Apply.

Close Paragon .

Restart the pc.

Now you can do what you want with the D partition.

Have you backed up all your Disk0. Would be good to back up Disk1 also.

Are you running an elevated cmd ?

Type cmd in start search - when the black box pops up - rt click it and run as admin ( that is what elevates it )

then type

bcdedit /export C:\Boot\bcd

then press enter

it should say it was successful.

Are you in vista while you did this?

Don't you have a Vista dvd - or oem recovery disc?

Never mind - download the 7 .iso from the link in my previous post. Get the correct bit version ( 32 bit if you have 32 bit Vista ) - they are much better than the Vista ones.

Burn the iso to cd using an isoburner ( don't format the cd ). If you don't have an isoburner - use this:

View attachment isoburner.zip

Boot the cd - windows loading files - select language and keyboard - Next - you get a screen saying "Install Now" ( don't click that , the installation files are not on there ).

At the bottom of that same screen , click "Repair my computer".

It may go into auto repair straight away, if not, highlight the Vista installation , click Next, select Startup Repair.

yes i have the vista disk and i ran startup repair. i have now sucesussfully booted vista from the hard drive. will i need to undo all the settings changes i made?? and is there another way to delete xp without moving hardware?

My Computer

Look in Disk Management.

You will see the Vista partition is now showing as "System".

If you have an XP entry in the boot menu - delete it;

from an elevated cmd

bcdedit /delete {ntldr} /f

then press enter.

You can delete the XP partition if you like.

You don't need to change anything else.

You might prefer to have the Vista HD first in bios boot order - you can enter bios setup to do that , or simply swap the SATA cables to the HD's.

It's not compulsory.

can u walk me through that please? i have opened disk management like b4, can see the d drive has (system, active, primary partition) next to it, and the c drive has (boot, page file, active, crash dump, primary partition)...but i have no idea how to delete a partition or go into the boot menu, (unless u mean the boot menu from when the pc first boots, in which case i only have 2 options to boot from cd rom or from hard disk)
