I have a fairly new laptop with the blu ray DVD player/burner in it, I reformatted my laptop and it says no DVD present when I put one in the drive. When I go to system, device manager it says the device is working properly. It worked the other day and then it quit working. Anyone have any ideas?

The DVD would have been nice, but try this
Go to search
Type cmd
Right click on cmd... Run as administrator
Then in cmd type sfc /scannow
If problems are found run it several times.

I typed cmd and it comes up vertical unit, unit , unit etc..setup, string, error, error error etc...
Is it possible I have a failing drive? It does recognize it. When I put in a black DVD sometimes it comes up with the "what do you want to do" box

A failing drive is a very real possiblity. We get thrown off the track because the problem started right after format. But again it could be the drive.
You followed by SFC instructions, carefully. That should work.
Run a virus scan. Never can hurt.
