Solved Starting Over After a Complete Reinstallation

Hello, all. I dearly hope that someone can render me some assistance in this matter.

Today, I was forced to use my Vista Ultimate installation disc to reinstall Vista - since yesterday morning, my computer was not able to get out of a loop (first going to Windows Error Recovery and then, when selecting any of the options, going to the green loading bar, where it the green bar stopped moving about 2/3 of the way, and going back to Windows Error Recovery).

The installation went smoothly enough, but I am absolutely clueless how to get my computer to roughly the same conditions it was before this fiasco. Fortunately, it would appear that all of my files and folders from before this re-installation have been saved in the folder Windows.old. However, I am at a complete loss as to how to reconfigure my Internet connection, how to restore my previous screen resolution (there are now only three options for resolution under Display Settings), and essentially getting the basics back in order.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Hello Frontline1944,
The first thing is to re-install all your Windows updates plus service packs, then all your drivers, sound, video, and chipset, (motherboard drivers), plus any third party drivers you may need, things like keyboard and mouse, (if needed).
If you can provide some system specs, we may be able to help you with this.

I attached a copy of a DxDiag evaluation done after the re-installation for system stats.

Unfortunately, because I cannot connect to the Internet on the computer in question, I don't think it is possible to download updates, drivers, etc.

Using the computer that you are on now. Go to the sites with the drivers, etc. Save to a flash etc. Then you will have them for the computer that is not working.

I know this seems like a pain to you, but you are with friends, now. Take your time.

Thats a good idea from richc46.
You can download the two service packs too as stand alone updates, if you not going to connect to the internet, then the security updates are not that important, but the service packs may help to keep your PC running a little better.

I feel very comforted. Thank you for the kind words. : )

I will try to update my drivers in this manner this weekend and will post updates (and questions) as appropriate.

stoneys-nutz: how can I download the two SPs without connecting to the internet?

Get Windows Vista Service Pack 2 On Your Machine

If I find SP1 I will give you the link, also. With this you can save the SP, just as a driver, etc.

If you do have problems with the SP, I do not think that they are essential at this juncture. Lets get the computer back to working conditions, and then we can go from there.

If, however, you can install the SP, Stoney is correct, it would be beneficial.

Using the PC you are on now, download the service packs, save them to a flash drive, and then install them on to the PC with no internet connection.

My apologies for not returning for so long. I've been extremely busy as of late with school, but now that spring break is upon us, I have some time to get down to this business.

I assume that one must have SP1 installed first before installing SP2, correct? Does it matter if the service pack is for x86? I believe that the "reborn" computer uses Vista x32.

Oh would love to get back to the good old school days.

In any event, 86 is the 32 bit. We have 32 (x86) or 64 bit. So you are fine.

Install SP1 first.

Always start with a restore point.

I downloaded both service packs to my desktop, but I am encountering an error when I try to transfer them to a flash drive.

Excellent news! It appears as though updating the driver for the Ethernet Controller gave me my internet connection, and so I was able to successfully update the drivers for my video/sound as well. My resolution is as it was before the reinstallation. : )

I went ahead and installed Office 2007.

I'm currently downloading the important updates from Windows Update.
