Yes, many thanks for the wonderful assistance here. I appreciate it very much.

Is there anything else major that I should be aware of? I intend on installing some anti-virus software as soon as possible.

If not, feel free to close this thread as you see fit. Again, many, many thanks!

Glad that you asked. Download Microsoft Security Essentials as the Anti Virus
and Malwarebytes as the anti malware and maintain the computer properly.

We wish you all the best.

You have malware protection (probably in you Anti Virus, ck to be sure). If so MB scan once a week is sufficient. I am using the free version, too.

Okay, great!

I think I only have one question left, but it might be too specific.

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 desktop computer. Sometimes, when going to turn the computer off, I accidentally put it into sleep mode. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be any way of getting the computer out of sleep. Pressing the power button, Escape, spacebar, moving the mouse, or anything else that I can think of does nothing. I am forced to press and hold the Power button to do a hard restart of the computer.

Upon restarting, the computer often will not go to the login screen as it should but will go through various black screens. I remember something with "Windows Recovery Console" saying that there had been an error and how would I like to boot the system (Normal, Safe, etc).

Is there anything I can do about this issue or should I simply try my best to avoid sleep mode?

Once again, many thanks for the help!

Go to search>device manager>mice>change settings>power options. Makes sure mouse is set to wake you from sleep. Do the same with keyboard.

Thank you both.

The mouse/keyboard were enabled to bring the computer out of sleep, but when I tried it out, they did not work. Oh well, it's not as if I ever intentionally use sleep anyway.

Bare Foot Kid, unfortunately the post you gave me didn't result in any changes to the shutdown menu, but I searched around a bit and found this that worked: http://www.vistax64.com/248395-post2.html

That's odd mate as it worked for me right off the bat when I tried it, at least you found a solution.

BTW, it doesn't remove it from the menu it disables it and grays it out.

Did you do a re-boot, this from the tutorial.

* Reboot or logoff and logon and sleep is gone from the shutdown menu.
