laptop lid settings

i really like the fact that when i close the lid,the machine is set to turn off.
why can not it do the opposite,as in turn on,load windows and connect to the internet??when the lid is opened.

With my Toshiba this only works when it is on mains power.

You can only get it to sleep not turn off. Then it can wake up when you open the lid.
Only on mains power.
Maybe you need to ask HP if it is available on their laptops.

That is not correct you can set it to turn off when the lid is closed. this very computer, a Toshiba Satellite with Vista installed is set up to shut down when the lid is closed and I shut it down every day that way.

reporting; 30 seconds,sleepmode.
open lid,first hitch,welcome screen to be clicked.
machine only ever used by me and accessible only to me.
password not wanted.after that i was prompted by "connect" window.with connect automatically tick box.got connected.4 minutes.2 manual steps to get rid of.
in internet options,connection,dial when no connection,selected.
i will play now with user settings to lose the entire welcome/password experience.

Do you have a dial up connection?
If you have cable it should be set to never dial a connection.
On the welcome screen at the bottom left (if I remember) is a box play at start up,
Uncheck this box

The wireless might just find the networks for you, you may still have to select it.
This is good security and I would think twice about changing that.
