Solved Unknown "app" requests focus all the time

MartaS

Member
Hello, I am experiencing trouble with my Windows Vista SP2. An unknown service or application (I do not really know) requests focus exactly everytime:

1) I open a folder or pretty much any application
2) I copy or cut anything (text, file, ...)

It makes current application or folder loose the focus however application seems to be still active at the Windows Taskbar.

As I was curious what had taken the focus I pressed ALT+SPACE combination to reveal basic window options that appear in the top-left corner of the window. However I just got options to either move or close the window. I naturally decided to close it. So I did and the focus came back to application which got it stolen from in the first place. But when I opened another application, folder or copy/cut something it made itself again and again stole the focus. I tried to move it using the move option and arrows after pressing ALT+SPACE again and it seems to move (even though I can see just the mouse moving but no actual window) and stay on the spot (and steel the focus of my applications) untill I close it and it creates itself again in the top-left corner of the screen again. How do I know it moved when I can't see it? Well I pressed ALT+SPACE again and the menu appeared on the spot I moved the thing to.

I would very much appreciate any help because it really annoys me.

Hello MartaS, welcome to Vista Forums!

The first thing to do to make sure is to download and install the free version of Malwarebytes, when it's installed run a full scan, if it finds anything, let it clean and run scans until it comes clean; be sure to keep us informed.

I don't think it's a problem of Windows Explorer, it affects all applications including explorer.exe

re: Unknown "app" requests focus all the time

Here's something to try:

Right-click the Taskbar and open Task Manager.

While the Focus-Stealer is present, check the Applications tab
in Task Manager for anything that doesn't look right.

Switch over to the Processes tab, move the Task Manager window to the side,
but leave the Image Name column still visible.

Do Alt+Space on the Focus-Stealer , and watch for what
disappears in Task Manager as you close the Focus-Stealer.

thanks for your input but seems during the moment (as you called it) the Focus-Stealer gets the focus or after closing it via ALT+SPACE and Close no process was either created or terminated, but good thought.

I am up for forcely terminating processes one by one and checking if my problem disappears...
Anybody have any idea how bad it can go for system? Because I really don't want to mess things up. And please don't give me option to format the C drive and reinstall OS. That very last thing I want to do, really :-)

If it's a malware it's probably hiding from TM. These nasties can get pretty sophisticated.

re: Unknown "app" requests focus all the time

well Malwarebytes Free Virus Scanner most likely helped me get rid of another problem (my PC never turned off it self, I had to do it manually) which I'm VERY grateful for but that sucker who steals the damn focus is still present. Oh god this annoys so bad @_@ like you have no idea.

If it is some kind of malware it has to be good because neither Malwarebytes nor NOD32 have never detected it.

I'm still curious though how bad could it be if I start terminating processes one by one and check for results :-P

re: Unknown "app" requests focus all the time

OK I looked at the Bleeping Computer list and the site is not easy to navigate.
I won't be able to look at this for a couple of days and someone else may do it before then.
If you want to have a go yourself I would look at these sites to help.

PC Hell: HijackThis Tutorial for Removing Spyware

How To Analyze HijackThis Logs

I have had a quick look and you do have unwanted items in the log.
Sorry not able to help sooner, health issues.

ERUNT and NTREGOPT

Download ERUNT and backup your registry first.

Then run this temp file cleaner

TFC - Temp File Cleaner by OldTimer - Geeks to Go!
And restart your computer. Close browser.

Rerun Hijack This but you don't need to keep a log.
On each item you think is not needed ex. Asktoolbar,BHO'S,etc.
Highlight and go to (going by memory now) Show more info about highlighted. Bottom left I think.
If you put the item there, or it says it is needed, leave it, if not tick it.
When you have finished tick fix checked.
Restart your computer.
I didn't know if you put the school in your trusted sites list or not
A lot of the entries are temporary internet files and that is why I suggest running the clean up tool first to make it easier to read the log

re: Unknown "app" requests focus all the time

ok, I cleaned temp files using TFC and deleted/fixed more than 100 entries using Hijack This. Log seems pretty clean to me, everything seems fine except 2 facts:
1) Got my trusty blue screen after one Hijack This scan (did 3 more scans since then and seems fine though)
2) Still have the problem :-(
