Hi Brink,
i read your tutorials before i posted here- thanks!
the memory test(s) took place 10 hrs. ago, so i think i should see the test log by now - but i do not :(
there are no search results for "MemoryDiagnostics-Results"
and the only log i found when i searched for the word "Memory" was posted in my question, nothing else.
also the memory diagnostics tool tray icon was not showing as well...

*i think the event viewer does not "record" other event after the initial one:
The Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool scheduled the testing of the computer's memory to run immediately
Though the test took place and no faults seen during the test.

In Event Viewer, expand Windows Logs and then click on System. Then click on the title "Source" in the header row to sort by that option (it may take a minute or two, so be patient). Then scroll through the list until you come to the M's and the MemoryDiagnostics-Results entry should be there. If not, then for some reason the diagnostic process did not complete correctly or did not create the log - and at this point I'm not sure why either would not occur. Since it always records that first event, the MemoryDiagnostics-Reults log would NEVER appear if it were true that it did not record the second event (and I'm certain that it does happen since I've seen it on my own machine and it too had no problems and merely reported the event as information). Did you receive any error messages at any point in the process - before or after booting?

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

P.S. I also don't know about the icon not appearing - though it is probably related to the fact that the event viewer entry wasn't created either.

Hi Lorien,
-I scrolled through, and the MemoryDiagnostics-Results entry is not there. i can see only the 1st event.
-I didn't receive any error messages at any point in the process - not before nor after booting
- i also generated a health report -there isn't any memory problem ....

Let's check your system files to see if there is any problem there - and your hard drive too while we're at it:

Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories / Command prompt and right click on command prompt and click run as Administrator.

Type sfc /scannow and enter and let it run. It will scan and try to fix some of your system files. Hopefully it will complete with no corruption it could not repair (if there is such corruption post back here or try to analyze it to find the problem file(s) using http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228. Try to attach the report (you may need to copy it to your desktop before it will permit you to attach it) here so we can see if they can be repaired with good copies from the installation disk (unless there are too many).

While in Command Prompt, type chkdsk /f /r and enter and let it run. It will want to schedule itself to run at the next restart. Answer yes and then reboot to run the program. It will scan and try to fix any corruption or bad sectors on your hard drive and mostly remove that as a potential cause.

At this point I'm trying to figure out why the logs are not showing up and the icon is not appearing. It may be due to some file corruption, so that's the point of the above two tests. We may need to dig deeper, but this is where we should start.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Thank you for your detailed answer,
i'm a bit afraid to use sfc /scannow since it can roll back some new files and/or updates which i'd like to avoid right now.
I started
chkdsk /f /r now- where will i find the log results so i can post it?
I'll report later on...

There are no log results. They just appear in the window after it is completed. I'm only interested to know how about any corruption it found - you can ignore everything else.

Thanks and Good luck!

sfc /scannow ?
or some other checking option without auto. repair files?
Thanks

instead sfc /scannow i ran :

C:\Users\amir>sfc /verifyonly

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection found integrity violations. Details are included in

the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
I searched in the log for memtest/memtest.exe - i did not find any entry.
(the log is 18M in size so i think i can not post it here)
So can we do something?
Thanks

Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories / Command prompt and right click on command prompt and click run as Administrator.

Type findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt

Then copy that text file to your desktop - I believe it will be much less than 18MB and you should be able to attach it (though to be honest, I've never looked at a SFC /verifyonly generated log before so it may differ a lot from a SFC /scannow generated log and still be much larger). If it remains too large to attach (and so large that zipping won't help), then please go through it and try to find the errors, copy them (everything related to each error which may be on several lines) to a blank notepad document one-by-one, and then attach that text file. The problem may not be with the memtest file but with something it needs to operate properly.

The fact that it found integrity violations means some of your system files are missing or corrupt. Perhaps SFC /scannow could fix them, but maybe even that wouldn't work (though it would be the next logical step now that we know problems exist - if they are corrupt, then an older but good copy of the file is better than an unusable and corrupt newer version in any case). If SFC /scannow can't fix the problems, then the only ways to repair the system files are (if there are only one or two) extracting them from a genuine Windows Vista Installation Disk and replacing the corrupt files with good files from the disk OR doing a system repair/upgrade (again using the genuine Windows Vista Installation Disk). Do you have that disk or can you get your hands on any genuine Vista Installation Disk with the same bit-size (as they all contain all versions of Vista)?

First, let's see exactly what files are corrupt or missing according to SFC. I look forward to your reply with the text file containing those error messages.

Thanks and good luck!

That report looks fine. Those "errors" aren't really errors - they occur frequently and are perfectly normal. You have no file corruption.

At this point I'm stumped. The only options I have to offer are way too radical given how minor the problem is (especially since you were concerned about doing a SFC /scannow).

Perhaps someone else will post with some other suggestions or alternatives to try. I'll see if I can find someone to stop by and at least take a look and post if he has anything to recommend.

I'm sorry I wasn't able to help you with this problem, but I hope someone else can.

Good luck!

Hmmm. This is going to cause a bit of a problem on this computer if you are multibooting, because if there is an actual problem, we won't know which OS to target and try to fix.

Ooops! We just needed to check! Apart from this, are there any problems? I mean is the only issue you are confused as to why this has not appeared (don't worry, we are just as confused as you) We just wanted to know whether you felt this was a serious issue, or a mild curiosity.
