Only Text Shortcuts

Hello, I am trying to make a Zune "metro" like interface on my computer. One of the main features is prominence of text. I would like to have desktop shortcuts that are only text(no icon) and when clicked, would work like shortcut. Is there any possible way to do this? My system is Windows Vista Basic 32bit.

I don't think so but would like to see if anyone can come up with something here.. as most software shortcuts will include an icon which cannot be changed, you can personalise folders thou.. the only option here to do that is to create hyperlinks to the software exe path.. but that should be on notepad/ word or spreadsheet,.. if you can add hyperlinks on a picture and put that picture as your desktop background, i don't know if the links will work there.. only possibilies i can see..

someone correct me please

cheers

Hi Cookie490

Maybe you can try this :
Right-click a folder or shortcut and choose Properties.
Click the Customize tab, or for a shortcut the Shortcut tab.
Click the button Change Icon...
This should appear in the text-field : %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll
If not, paste it there, and click OK.
Then choose an empty space.
Click OK & Apply.

If you do this with a shortcut, then you will still see the shortcut-arrow.
You can remove the arrow with Remove arrow.reg
If you want to place the arrow back, use Show arrow.reg

I hope this helps

Hi cookie490,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

I know of no way to make the desktop have just text links to programs and websites and whatever (I don't believe that is possible), but some workarounds may do the trick for you (or at least come as close as possible).

There is, however, a way to "hide" the icons for the most part (there will still be icons, but they should be blank or the background color). Here's the procedure: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/171992-hide-folder-shortcut-icon.html. The text will still show, but there'll be no icon.

If you still see the shortcut arrows (even though the icons are gone), they too can be removed. See: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67615-shortcut-arrow.html.

A totally different way to go is with a Sidebar Gadget such as Windows Live Gallery. While it doesn't solve the problem as you described it, if you set up a number of these gadgets on your desktop you will have text lists of links/shortcuts without icons inside the gadget windows. I'm not sure if this is what you want, but present it as an alternative in case it will meet your needs better than the other options. There may be other gadgets that do something similar (I didn't do a comprehensive search and only looked on this one site) if the idea is close but you prefer another look or choice.

I hope this helps. Unfortunately, there's no other ways I know of to accomplish what you really want.

Good luck!
