How to reinstall Movie Maker

Hello everyone. First time user here.

By dragging and dropping my wife moved some Moviemamker files. I think reinstalling the program is the best way to go to fix it. We have a Dell computer running Vista Home Premium 32 bit. Can we use the operating system disk to do the reinstall without installing the entire system? Thanks.

Re: How to reinstall Moveimaker

Welcome
If it is windows movie maker, its free
Just download
Be sure to uninstall any of the software that is still installed.
You may want to use revo for a complete clean uninstall
Windows Live Movie Maker 2011
Revo is free as is Movie Maker
http://www.revouninstaller.com/

Please let me know if my guess about the software is wrong.
Let me know exactly what the software is.

In lieu of the above idea, you can use system restore to make the software whole again.

If it were my computer, I would reinstall, as shown above.

Go with the system restore. Pick a date 3 days before your wife moved the files and then everything will be just like it was then.
Personal documents etc will not be touched.

Since Movie Maker was part of the OS, and now there is a new version, the new version should be able to be installed without uninstalling, first.
Before you try make a system restore point, in case you do not like the results.
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76332-system-restore-point-create.html

To summarize
You cannot uninstall Movie Maker
You can use a system restore to go back before the problem (go back 3 days)

You can install the new version over the old. Because the old is defective, there may be problems. To avoid a problem that can be seriious, make a system restore point before installing the new version. You can return to the time prior to installation with Restore.

How can I reinstall the same version of Movie Maker that I had which is Ver.
6.0.6002.18273? What has happened I can't get the toolbar to appear in the drop down View, the Status bar appears but not the Tool Bar. I also need collection to appear as well instead of Imported Media in the drop down should show Effects - Transistions and Collection Folders should appear. Unable to get back to a restore point was never setup. Somehow a file got corrupted and what appears instead of Collections Folders is Imported Media. So how can I get it switched back to Collection Folder?

Thank you,

Mary

Hi gandmal,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

While you may be used to the version of Movie Maker that comes with Vista and want to restore it to a functional condition (and Richard has provided good advice on how to do that), you may want to consider something he mentioned earlier in passing. Windows Live Movie Maker 2011 Windows Live Movie Maker 2011 is part of the new Windows Live Essentials 2011 Suite Windows Live Essentials 2011 - Download free Microsoft programs. You can install some or all of the programs (you can select just Windows Live Movie Maker if you want or can try some of the other offers as well - I downloaded them all myself).

It will not overwrite your current version but install as a separate program - and it's free. You may find you like this new version better than the Vista one (or you may dislike it in which case you can just uninstall it). If you like it, it may solve your problem by making the Vista version superfluous so you need not worry that it doesn't work as you have an adequate, good, or better alternative.

The choice is yours. You really have nothing to lose by trying it out to see if it will serve as an adequate substitute - and you may even find that you prefer it. Plus it has much better support at this point - so it's easier to get problems and issues resolved at the suppport site and forum specifically dedicated to it Movie Maker Portal.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Thanks Rich. I will either do as you suggest or go to my external drive Safety Drill backup. That will take me back 2 months but should get what I need.

I also found out about MS System File Checker tool. I am trying that now.

If SFC finds errors, run it 3 times. If often does not make all repairs on first try.

Bad news
If report is no errors found thats it; your done with that procedure.
When the report shows errors, run three times.

OK. I see when installing updates Windows makes a restore point. Is that restore point available anywhere and are they stored for previous installations?

I can only go back 5 days using restore thru Systen Protection. I can't get to the System Recovery Options at boot screen.

I can get to Safe Mode, but can't get to Recovery Options Menu.

Edit: I did get to the System Recovery Options menu. I had to have my HD boot before the DVD. I still can only get to 5 dyas prior. I am not sure where any other restore points would be. It looks like I may have to use the Dell option to put back to factory specs.

Hi grandmal,

System Restore is automatically set to show only 5 days of restore points UNLESS you check the box in the lower left hand corner that says essentially "show more than 5 days worth of restore points." When checked, you will see all that are available and perhaps one will be old enough to suit our needs. See below for a screenshot of what I'm talking about.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

In addition to the above try to go back about 3-5 days before the problem occurred.

Then give it your best shot and just pick the furthest day from the problem.
I use the 5 days as an arbitrary number to make sure that the restore is before any part of the problem began to materialize.

If the oldest one does not do it then I think my next best option is to use my external Maxtor safety drill back to 10-21-10. That will over-write the entire HD to that date. I think the last option is a repair install.

My Computer

That sounds like it is almost like system restore, except that it is for the entire drive and not just the OS.
If you are going to lose all the changes that you made between that day and now, you may want to consider Repair first. I will admit that repair does not have a good a chance at success as does using your external.
The cost of the external is loss of everything between now and the date selected. Updates, pics, documents. Just so you know the costs.
