Personally, if you have a genuine Vista Installation Disk, I would recommend a repair/upgrade over the image restore as you will not lose EVERYTHING that happened since over 2 months ago (though you will need to reinstall all the updates and Service Packs for Vista since what was on the Vista Disk) - but the decision is yours. Plus, if Repair/Upgrade doesn't work (and it might not), you can still do the other option and having tried the repair/upgrade will make no difference with that (but not vice-versa).

I do not think I have a "real" Vista disk since I have a Dell PC. But there should be a repair install I think. I realize that using the external I need to backup pictures, Quicken etc. just before the doing the procedure.

Go with your original idea, then. Back up would be essential.

I totally agree with Richard. If you don't have a genuine Vista installation disk, then what you are talking about is essentially a clean install and the option to restore the image is a MUCH, MUCH better choice.
