Vista causes some programs to not run

Hi!

I have read and searched for solution for the problem but haven't been able to find any.

This is really annoying now and all started after I wanted to share the user folder and did something with the permissions when I put it out on the private network. I have taken it back now but everything is messed up.

All softwares that are not dependent of the user folder on the root C drive function OK I think
Like chrome that is on another drive. MSN Live messenger and Skype login doesn't work, some software for the internet bank won't start, the clock and calender that pops up when you enter vista to the right on the screen gives some .ini error, Openoffice can't read old documents, PDF creator doesn't work but starts and is useless, some software says that I have to get flash because the script can't be read.

These are some of the problems and all to do with software
So what have I done before experiencing this, was tampering with the permissions and I think that eventually I deleted Trusted Installer from permissions. When I was tampering with permissions I pressed cancel and some message popped up that I should close this process later because some files have altered permission and some do not.

I had problems with Windows mail too but somehow made I to function again but it always wants username/password even the the checkbox is checked, I have looked up this problem too without finding any solution on the password thing.

This is on my moms computer so she isn't very happy nor am I because I caused it somehow. :(

I tried once more to share on the network and take it back.
When I changed the permissions Windows IExplorer stopped functioning but I reverted this. I have done some things but nothing helped so far and I am convinced that it is a permission problem but I don't now how to fix it.

I hope there is a solution that is simple and easy!
Help me please!

Thanks!
I did a system restore and it didn't help, the restore was before I tampered with permissions and sharing. :(

Any other ideas?

I forgot to mention that Eclipse Helios, the workspace, is in the user folder on the root drive. When I start Eclipse it give me a popup message saying "Workspace in use or cannot be created, choose a different one". I wanted to make a new document and the only option after right-clicking --> New, was Folder and it has to be selected as administrator. NO other OPTION is available besides Folder.

One more thing! I can't download and install Java Update it gives an error message. There has to be some link between all of these symptoms.

I have read the steps in the link you posted, last step seems the most relevant. How do I know what the right permissions are? I have SYSTEM, Administrator(), User().

I see at the bottom what Users/Groups there should be, as the screenshots show, but I can't find what the permissions should be for each one. Besides, do I need to have, Another User(), as the screenshots show, there is only one account on this computer?

And what about Trusted Installer? Is it overkill?

I am planning of changing the permissions for the whole root C drive so that everything gets changed and then take on the registry.

I am so excited right now! :D

I am waiting for your opinion because it says the I am about to change the root drive and it can cause some consequences. So I want your approval first hehe. I do not dare to try before that maybe I will mess it up even more.

I made a system restore point to for my C drive. I also saw I got a strange disk in the menu for System-properties called PQSERVICE listed under "Available disks", has a folder icon, hope it is normal or okay(that is, it doesn't matter).

I just add more and more hehe. I noticed, if I press advanced under the Security tab then the User(s)/Groups doesn't inherit anything. Oh, the owner of root drive C is Administrator().

Trusted installer, DO NOT REMOVE permissions, if you do, the OS will not work properly.
If there is only one account try giveing full permission to that account and see what happens.
I STRONGLY SUGGEST that you do not tamper with registry unless you are proficient in that area. If you do, be sure to make a system restore point first and back up registry.

I deleted Trusted Installer x| . Didn't know what I was doing obviously :(
Can I add it again?

Okay, I will try to not touch the registry. If the problem persists then maybe I need too?

I deleted the Trusted Installer but the link you posted shows how to add it again!

In the C:\Users there is a folder called "Shared" should I replicate every option, group(s), user(s) from that folder to my user folder?

Should I apply Trusted Installer to my root C drive too?

It doesn't let med change the security information in the sub folders!

What I suggest is just to follow the tutorials. Any other changes may cause problems and in addition, if it still does not work, I will not really be sure of what you did.
Follow the insturctions and then try and see how it works.
If it still does not work post, again.

Good news!

Functionality is being restored but there is problems left. For example Acrobat reader is functioning, Windows update, Anti-virus update is ok, Windows sidepanel is starting up, I have all the options when right-clicking
--> new.

But I don't really know where to go now. Some folders/files didn't accept the new security settings when I applied it, but most did. Like the temp folder and Windows Live (messenger still isn't working, won't log me in) for example.

I also did something I shouldn't have done,
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/159360-trustedinstaller-restore-owner.html
step 3, the note, so my recycle bin is damaged...

So where too from here?

My Computer

If it were mine, I would unistall the programs that dont work, using revo, and install again.
Temp folders, just get rid of them.
You can use tfc.
TFC - Temp File Cleaner by OldTimer - Geeks to Go Forums
At this point, just forget about TFC, you can delete them when all problems are solved; they dont bother you.

After TFC, you do lose your cookies. Saved IDs etc, you will have to log in again, once.

Actually, it looks like good adivce. At this point the OP can choose to try your suggestions or just uninstall the few remaining programs (he mentions one, Messenger) and just reinstall. The temporary files are not even needed, just use TFC to get rid of them.

The recyclebin is working again. When I restarted the computer it started repairing Vista because of damage to important system files. It wanted to do the same thing on this startup today but I choose to make a normal start and it seems okay.

I used revo for one software and I wonder, Should I delete everything revo suggests? Even in the registry? The software I reinstalled was the one that gave some flash script error, the reinstall didn't help. I suppose the flash thing has to be reinstalled. I will try with Windows messenger too but I need to know about the registry thing that revo suggests to be deleted, is it okay?

I will try the security settings link but I am doubting it will help. I did something similar but in another way. I used the automatic FixIt software. Didn't help. I don't understand step 4 with the lists in the cmd.

After the security thing I will restart the computer and let it repair itself if it needs too.
The Flash script is it this one "RICOH R5C83x/84x Flash Media Controller Driver Ver.3.51.01". Should I reinstall it maybe? And delete everything revo suggests (even registry keys)?

I cannot tell you what to do with registry. You may want to back it up first, if you decide to make changes.

I get this error (see image attachment), it is in swedish but I can't reinstall messenger now. I updated Office and when I was about to install the update it gave me an error (see images). That error has to do with permissions, error 5.

I do not think that I have resolved the permission issue yet. If I can restore back the default permissions then I think everything will function properly. I can use Open office after it crashes once but it doesn't restore files. I can save new documents but have to save them as another document. The last images shows the error messages when trying to save the document in the same file.

How do I restore the permissions for these basic software that other softwares need to use to function properly.

I am not familiar with Vista so I have maybe done something the wrong way when trying to fix the permissions or not done enough.

Yes I agree, but I do not know the default permission settings for the groups and users. Are they the same for all the folders on the boot drive. What folders take care of essential programs?

How does your permission look on your boot drive? Are the permissions the same for all the sub directories and files as the parent directory on the drive?

Is there some kind of template I can go by to change everything manually?

I just got an idea and googled it. Could it help if I restore the computer back to its factory state. I have no Vista cd because its and acer aspire laptop and I read that it should have this option of restoring to factory state. Could it help? Do I loose files and programs? Do I need to backup the documents?
